Valuable Polishing Techniques

Rubber Backer Pad

Use a rigid backer pad

Flexible backers are great for concave profiles like ogees, but in most other cases, they are rarely needed.

Pad top and bottom

Stop Using Only the Middle of the Pad

Use the edges of the pad as you move from the top half to the bottom half, sliding across the stone edge. You should feel the pad making contact, which will help you release some of the pressure.

Use of Water

How much water to use

If you don’t feel the lower grit pad gripping the material, you might be using too much water or running the RPM too high. For grits 400 and above, it’s recommended to use more water. The right amount of water helps the pads work more efficiently.

POLISHSURF RPM

Use of polisher RPM

Using too high of an RPM can cause excessive heat, leading to white resin pads smearing on the stone or even burning the stone. As a general rule, use 1500-2500 RPM for 30, 50, 100, 200 grit pads, and 3000-3500 RPM for 400, 800, 1500 and 3000 grit pads. Never exceed 5000 RPM.

POLISHSURF Stone Polishing Kit

A Polishing Set Designed for Heavy Projects

More Lower Grits to Remove Scratches

Lower grits (#30, #50, #100, #200) are used more often and more heavily, so we include extra pads for those.

Always start with the lowest grit, #30, and then move up to the next higher grit in order. Use the polisher initially at low speed (1500-2500 RPM).

Do not skip any grits. Start polishing the material edge using a side-to-side motion, moving from the top half of the pad to the lower half. Only move to a higher grit once the surface is smooth and free of saw marks or old sealant.

Higher Grits to Achieve Shiny Finish

When using higher grits (#400, #800, #1500, #3000), add more water and increase the RPM to 3000–3500 to prevent burning the stone’s surface.

Don’t skip any grits—each step is important. You'll start to see a nice shine from grit 800, while grits 1500 and 3000 will give you a mirror-like finish.

Do I need to attach the diamond polishing pads to an angle grinder, polisher or drill?

This set comes with a backing pad adapter that lets you attach polishing pads to polishers or angle grinders.

Drills are not recommended because it’s impossible to maintain a consistent speed which is mandatory in the polishing process.

Angle grinders usually spin too fast for polishing unless they have variable speed control. For best results, use a polisher or a variable speed angle grinder.

The Set includes ONLY diamond polishing pads:

  • 3 x Grit #30 | 3 x #50
  • 2 x Grit #100 | 2 x #200
  • 1 x Grit #400
  • 1 x Grit #800
  • 1 x Grit #1500
  • 1 x Grit #3000
  • 1 x Rubber Backer Pad
Wet and Dry Polishing - don't exceed 5000 RPM

Expert Tips on How to Polish

  1. Grind wet. Wet grinding eliminates the damage to stone-polishing pads.
  2. Judge dry. If the surface is wet, scratches can pass unnoticed.
  3. Use the whole wheel. Stop using only the middle of the pad.
  4. Skip no grit. It’s always faster to do it right the first time than to try to take shortcuts and risk damaging the stone you’re working on.
  5. Polish slow. Keep the speed of the pad low for the lower grits #50 #100 #200 (~2000-2500 RPM) and go to higher speeds for higher grits #800 #1500 (~3000-3500). Never use the pads at higher speeds than 5000 RPM.
  6. Keep it clean. A good way to ensure every single part of edge is polished is to wipe the edge surface with gently squeezed wet cleaning towel and then polish dry.
  7. Believe what you see. If your eyes tell you that something is not quite right about the surface, stop! Figure out what the problem is before continuing.
  8. Be patient. Polish a little and look a lot. This is the mantra for successful results in the polishing process.
