HOW TO USE
Step 1. Place the support block on the lower part of the instrument.
Step 2. Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen the pencil until 5-6mm of the graphite core is exposed (do not loosen or damage the core). Hold the pencil at a 90° angle, and grind it on the 400 grit sandpaper until a flat end with sharp edges is achieved (the edges must not have any fractures or chips). After each use, rotate the pencil 180° before using it again, or sharpen it again.
Step 3. Insert the sharpened pencil into the hole of the instrument, ensuring the pencil tip touches the workbench, then tighten the screw and remove the balance weight.
Step 4. Place the instrument on the tested surface and apply force (neither to break the pencil tip nor puncture the coating film). Push it away at a speed of about 1mm/sec over a distance of at least 7mm. Start with the hardest pencil and make five scratches until you find a pencil that does not damage the coating. The hardness of this pencil represents the pencil hardness of the measured coating.
