About this item

  • Special antenna sensor allows quick hook-up to spark plug and ignition coil wires and measures spark plug wire voltage from 0 to 50000 volt
  • For 1 to 12 cylinders and 2, 4 cycle and DIS engines
  • Measures from 200 to 20000 RPM on a 4-1/2 digits LCD display
  • Advanced microcontroller technology yields 0.05 percent accuracy
  • Works on DIS, conventional, magneto and most spark ignition system

The TA100’s unique and proprietary technology allows the user to perform quick and reliable diagnostics of non-starts, misfires, fouled up or damaged spark plugs and/or spark plug wires, by comparing digital read-outs of the spark plug voltage between cylinders on engines using conventional distributor/ignition coil, DIS (Distributor-less) or waste spark and magneto technologies.

I liked the fact that I could check RPMs and spark plug voltage with out hooking up wires

This is more expensive than some of the competition. The batteries are replaceable so this should last a while.I use this for tuning Carbs.

Case provides good protection, and unit works well. Also useful to establish baselines re: ignition voltages for units working properly, for future troubleshooting reference. A must for synchronous generator set up to ensure proper hertz output. Feels nostalgic, because it feels solid and high quality.

Sometimes hard to get a accurate reading on small engines.Fortunately this model records the low rpm reading which is accurate

I use this tachometer primarily for small engine (2 and 4 Cycle) testing and repair where my optical tach is impractical to use. On a few occasions, I have used it on V6 automotive engines. It worked well in all cases. Also, I have found it to be considerably more accurate than others of similar design. In fact, I returned another manufacturer's much less expensive model because of unstable, inaccurate readings. The TA100, so far, seems t be accurate and having the Peak kV feature can provide some insight when troubleshooting. The case is plastic, and unfortunately, uses a cheaper "living" hinge rather than a proper pinned hinge, and may split over time.

I'm a small engine builder and repairer, lawn mowers, chainsaws, blowers, strimmers etc.I'm so glad technology has moved on and created such an amazing diagnostic tool.It is simplicity in itself. No wires to connect up, no messing with having to earth electrical parts. The most common problems with small engines is they rev so high, particularly 2 stroke enginesused in chainsaws, strimmers, blowers etc.Poor starting, poor running, engines that die on idle can be a problem to diagnose.Engines that are 2 plus years old do suffer from ignition module (coil) deterioration. They are okat high rpm but die out lower down the rev range. Most people make the mistake of resting thespark plug on the engine's metal block, turning the engine over, seeing a spark and assuming thecoil is fine. NOT SO. Once fitted in to the engine and under compression any weak spark will beextinguished by cylinder pressure.By simply resting the antenna on the HT lead with the "HT Voltage" option selected, you canclearly see how much voltage is being generated by the engines ignition coil.If its weak or none at all it will be clearly displayed on the digital screen. You can also if the engineis running but poorly, see the input/output voltage fluctuate. It will also indicate low voltage at idlecausing the engine to die. After fitting a new coil, you can get a min - max output from its memory.RPM Setting : Generators in particular have a max engine speed set by the manufacturer for goodreason. Although most have electronic switchgear to prevent excess voltage output, these systemsare NOT always reliable. The amount of times owners have raised the engine speed in the belief itwill generate more voltage then have the problem of burned out wiring or the overload trips keeptripping out is very common. You can set the engine speed as set on the ID plate on the engine.Mowers, strimmers, chainsaws, blowers have MAX RPM also for good reason. Engines that rev waybeyond those specified by the manufacturer can explode, more often they wear out prematurely. It's a must for 2 stroke engines, most have very specific minimum (idle) and maximum (full throttle)engine speeds. The maximum in some cases can be as high as 10,000 rpm on 2 strokes, 3,250 on most4 stroke engines. No messing about with 12v supply, winding an impulse wire round the HT lead likemy old diagnostic tool. Simply select "RPM" mode, the number of cylinders, 2 or 4 stroke and point theantenna at the HT lead. It will give you and IDLE RPM and MAX RPM, it will save both to its memory anddisplay until you press the "CLEAR" button.A SUPERB BIT OF KIT WELL MADE WITH ROBUST RUBBERISED CASE, RELIABLE AND ACCURATE, WORTHEVERY PENNY

Sweet, it works on any small engine. It's so nice that it works from a distance or up close. 2 cycles are hard to tune, but with this makes it easy. Lawn mowers you can use to adjust the governor idle speed. Really responsive, gives you Max/min RPM. Perfect for the small engine shop.

Glad I bought this smart tach! Very useful for my small engine repair shop. Also useful for cars and trucks too as long as it’s not diesel ofcourse. It goes from 1 to 12 cylinders and you easily find the faulty one without wasting time on the others. Great Canadian product!

I bought this to service and tune up chainsaws. The case is tough. The unit itself is very durable. Works exactly like the demo video in the listing. Very easy to use. Turns itself off after a minute of idle time (which is good for battery life). The reset button allows you to quickly get and clear your highs for carb adjustments on two strokes. Amazon has the lowest price by a long shot. Highly recommended.

I have not been able to get consistent RPM readings on small engines. I tested it on a lawn mower andtiller (both 4 cycle). Doesn't seem to matter if the probe is a few inches from the spark plug wire or right on top of it--the unit misses sparks and the readings double for a few seconds then return to normalor just go erratic. I got nothing close to the consistent readings shown in the string trimmer video.

Great device. Great for ignition wire kilovolt testing. I also used it to verify my in-dash tachometer reading (turns out my in-dash tach is not that accurate). It's light and very easy to use, just hold it over the distributor cap and the RPMs pop up. It can also be used with distributorless systems (I believe all you need to do is to set it to 2 cycle if your engine uses a waste spark system). I needed to diagnose a vibration in an older GM car and the diagnosis required an accurate RPM reading. The SmarTach was key. I would imagine it would also be a great aid if you need to set idle speed or any kind of RPM dependent work. There are no wires to set up. It really is a smart diagnostic tool. Works with 2 to 12 cylinder engines, 2 cycle and 4 cycle.
