Pricey? Yes, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for!" I am using a $2000 lens on a $3000 camera, so I couldn't settle for a $40 protective UV filter. In my opinion Hoya makes the best filters, so all of my lenses wear one. There are certainly other excellent filters, buy this is what I use. They are very strong and well coated for all the right reasons!
