Heavier than I expected, but main issue is the rough quality. It also bent in two places during the first medium duty use on creek gravel.

I bought this a couple of years ago. I have it stored in my camping box where it folds up nice and small and has proved very useful for digging the necessary holes and putting out camp fires. However, I was off-roading last week and went over a snow bank that I thought I could make - i didn't, and spent two hours digging out the truck. If it wasn't for this shovel I would have been faced with a 2-3 hour hike to get help.Yes, I was dumb for trying to clear the bank, but that is another story (snow in Cali in July - what gives?). However, I dug through some pretty deep snow and ice with this (regularly tightening the collar because that comes loose on occasion) and will be buying another one so my wife can help me next time.

It is okay. It is good for emergency use and if you need to dig.It is not something I would depend on 100% because it is loose at the connection point (bit jiggly) as to where if I swung it like a strong man it would break and especially if I used it like a pick.It is not strong like Army issued, but it will do in a survival situation. You will want to have this better than having nothing at all. Trust me.Be prepared!

I needed a shovel/spade for camping purposes. Since my Army time i like them fold-able spades as for a weapon, splitting fire wood or dig a quick hole. They will break if you really hit very hard ground but for digging a poop hole in normal ground.....just perfect. There is one con though. You have to bend down deep or...that's the way i do it....knee down on a peace of tarp for digging.

Great shovel, well built, and good sizeIt folds down really compact which is why I use it for backpackingHowever, the description says it weights 1lb. and it definitely weighs considerably more than that - about 3 lbs would be my best guessWorks for me because I am not an ultra light guy and like to have good tools I can rely on

I picked this up to keep in my trunk for emergencies--with this crazy weather of late, who knows when I'll need it. It is a convenient size folded up (about the size of a hard bound book) and comes in a bag to hold it. When unfolded the shovel seems rather sturdy, and certainly better than nothing in an emergency. I haven't had the opportunity to use it (thankfully), but from what I have observed from playing with it, it seems sturdy and should do the job in a pinch. It is a bit on the short side, but that is necessary to keep this at a convenient size.

Truly a case of "you get what you pay for" but in this case, I don't even feel like I got the $11 worth that I have for this.First off, I'm a former Marine that has logged countless hours digging numerous foxholes using my trusty little government issued entrenching or "E-tool". That piece of equipment is as solid as it gets. This cheap knockoff whoever.... Doesn't even come close. I bought one for Christmas, took it out of the box. Unfolded it. The mechanism that locks it in it's extended position feels very wonky. It's just a threaded collar, but somehow it managed to feel cheap. Folded it back up, threw it in my recovery/emergency gearbag in the back of my truck and that was that.Flash fowrard a month and a half and we get a snow storm. I decide to try this baby out to move some of the snow and ice out of my drive-way. Now in the interest of total disclosure, I'll say that I was not using it as a shovel, but more like a pick axe, with the pan folded at 90 degrees to chip away at the hard snow. While some may feel that this failure is due to improper use, I assure you that I've used my military tool to cut many tree roots and chip away at rocks in this very fashion. Anyway, after a few whacks, that wonky collar worked loose and needed to be re-tightened. After a few more, the head broke off completely. What a piece of garbage. All I could do was laugh.[...]Don't waste your time or money on this piece of junk. Lesson learned.

The shovel is very compact folds inward for easy storage. The material is well made and solid. Overall the product is good. I would recommend this as an emergency shovel to be stored in the trunk of your car. I ended up using mine to clear out snow from under my tire during the winter storm Hercules in Erie,PA. We had blown out a tire on the highway and I had to change the tire in the middle of a blizzard. This shovel was a lifesaver as there was tons of snow.

I bought this before and now ordered a couple more. The only difference was the color but that's only cosmetic. I originally wanted this as an emergency snow shovel in my truck. Couple this with cat litter and it has gotten me out of a couple unexpected spots. So I ordered 2 more in black just to have in my other car and one for disaster prep and/or camping.Overall build is pretty good. The lock ring is metal with a metal washer. It feels like it has some spring tension to it so when folding or opening the shovel it doesn't act like a limp paper and all. Conversion is smooth and easy enough and it hasn't collapsed on me yet. Then again it's only been snow and packed snow. Never tried it on soil or cracking ice away. It does have serrated edges one one side of shovel tip and one side although not sharpened. Don't think you'll be sawing trees down with it but it's got to be useful for something down the road. I've seen other selling for 50 bucks or so and honestly it doesn't feel that different but if not better than some of the Coleman ones I've checked at outdoor/sports stores. I think this is a good price for such level otherwise I wouldn't have bought a couple more. I do have my reservations about the flimsy cover..it's like a light grade nylon pouch with a button. It serves it's purpose but if you really want a more durable cover then by the plastic/rubber composite-type molded cover. Make sure it's the one that's universal for the trifold. I have an older one that held up and this fits that just fine! I'm happy the nagging wife didn't toss it away.

Decent sized unit folds and unfolds well. Can be tightened in the folded position so it won't rattle. Pouch is fairly heavy black nylon(cordura?) with a single belt loop. Shovel head is about right, lighter than a military surplus but likely less durable which is fine with me. The serrations are mostly decorative unless you plan to slice limes or something.
