A tiny piece of aluminum that you can get from a soda can.

It is usually recommended to not use handlebar shims, due to possible dangerous slippage. But, I had a situation where I would have to spend well over $50 to get the correct diameter handlebar. When I first installed this shim, I tightened it the same as I have for fifty years of working on bikes. It slipped after about 15 minutes of riding. I got home, and tightened it beyond the advised torque specification and it has held now for 200 miles. The only way that I can justify doing that is my handlebars and stem are very sturdy and can take the clamping pressure. A lesser bar would probably compress.

The shim worked, nothing else to say. Like others have said you could cut a pop can to do the same thing.

Shim did what is was supposed to do. I replaced the original straight handlebars with one that had some rise. At the time I didn't know that there were different handlebar standards. Anyway the bar I took off was 26.2mm and the new replacement handlebar measures 25.4. It doesn't seem like much but the handlebar clamp is much happier. I would not want the clamp to snap because its stressed more than it should be.

Keep in mind that mixing metals can be a disaster. If you're putting these over aluminum road bike handlebars, no harm done. But if you're shimming between stainless handlebars and a stainless stem on a mtb as I am, you're going to introduce galvanic corrosion to the system by using a piece of aluminum soda can and risking seized components, instead of spending an extra 7 bucks on this.

Basically you get a piece of a beer can that you have to trim to fit. It does work as advertised, but seriously a regular aluminum can could have been cut with a scissor to fit.

It's just a shim, but it's the right size

Forget this! Get a soda can and cut out a strip with your kitchen scissors. You would have to cut this anyway to make it the correct width. I think this item is too thin and two layers of soda can might be better. Delivery took 14 days. Set my project timeline back. Vendor and shipper feedback was poor. Really soured me on Niagara.
