The Handspring Visor Platinum is an infinitely expandable handheld computer that's 50 percent faster than the Visor Deluxe. With its enhanced power, speed, and performance, the Visor Platinum satisfies your need for speed and makes accessing all your data and viewing crisp grayscale graphics even easier. It runs Palm OS 3.52 for the Handspring on a Motorola 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor.

In addition to an address book, to-do list, and memo pad, the Platinum Visor features an enhanced date book, advanced calculator, and world clock. The 8 MB memory stores approximately 12,000 addresses, 10 years of appointments, 6,000 to do items, 6,000 memos, and 400 e-mails. It has usability features like address duplication and improved security and navigation. Since it uses Palm OS, you can beam information with other Palm users or download thousands of existing Palm-compatible applications. With the Springboard expansion slot, you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem, an MP3 player, and more.

The Platinum's USB connection makes synchronizing with your desktop computer fast and easy. You can quickly back up, update, or exchange information between the Platinum and your computer with the USB charging cradle and HotSync technology.

The Visor Platinum comes with a protective leather case, Palm Desktop software for Windows and Mac, and two AAA batteries. It is backed by one-year limited warranty.

Important note to customers: USB connectivity is compatible with Windows 98/2000/Me and USB-enabled Macintoshes running OS 8.1 and later. If you use Windows 95, Windows NT, or Mac OS 8.0 or lower, or your computer does not have a USB port, you will need to buy a separate serial cradle.

What's in the box

  • Visor Platinum
  • Graphite HotSync cradle
  • 8 MB RAM
  • AAA batteries
  • Graphite snap cover
  • Leather case

This device is old technology. I only bought it because my old one broke and I wanted the data that I had stored in it. It was great when I bought my first one many years ago. Today contact information is stored in my smartphone, which is Java powered so I can get applications for that. I sync, I review the contacts, and I set it on the shelf. If it did not have a GPS addon, I likely would not have picked it up again. This one did not come with a sync cradle, so the suppliers claim that it was 'like new' was simply a lie. A sync cradle is needed for proper use of this device. This omission was not noted in the item description. The description was deceptive. I bought a sync cradle separately. When I complained, the supplier replied to send it back, but that was not a practical solution to the issue. Beware suppliers that sell visors cheap, they likely do not have the sync cradle. The sync cradle is the only practical means to backup the data in a visor, so be sure to buy a visor with a sync cradle if you have a need for a visor.

I've used a Palm III (1Mg) for several years, and recently upgraded to the Handspring Visor Platinum (after my brother successfully did so). My decision was based on several factors which made the difference: (1) the USB cradle is super fast, and with 8Mg I wouldn't want to be waiting on a serial transfer; (2) the Backup Springboard module which eliminates the risk of data loss between synchs; (3) the built in conduit to Microsoft Outlook (selectable during setup, so pay attention during installation!); (4) the built-in Date Book +, which has several features found in Pimlico Software's fantastic"DateBk3" upgrade to the Palm III basic calendar (more below!); a mind-numbingly superior built-in calculator; and an improved find function which (like FindHack) searches for partial strings - like `eber' to find `eberhardt'. --- For those upgrading to the Handspring, transferring applications by beaming was fast and easy. The only wrinkle was remembering that the Handspring IRDA is on the left side of the unit, not on the top end. I was NOT able to beam my appointment records from DateBk3 to the Handspring unit. If, like me, you have the Palm Desktop on a pre-USB computer, and the Handspring on another (USB-equipped) machine, getting the data from one PDA to the other will be something a bit more than trivial. I'm not even going to bother; for awhile I'll carry both - using the Palm III for `historical information', and the Handspring for current and future events... Incidentally, the built-in Date Book + DOES have floating events and 6 views (compared to 3 for the basic Palm III calendar, and 5 for the DateBk3 add-on). If you installed icons for the Monthly view in DateBk3, be aware that Date Book + does NOT offer this option. This is the only drawback I've found in the Date Book +. --- The installation of the Handspring desktop was so easy I was - frankly - surprised, after so many times being told that `installation is a snap...' On minor snag I hit while installing was a spurious `virus warning' (I scan daily on continually updated Norton Anti-Virus) when it tried to import data into Outlook. I fiddled with the timing options, and it straightened itself out. Otherwise the initial installation was boringly uneventful ; ). --- If, like me, you hesitated upgrading because of previous unpleasant experiences, rest assured that it's really not very hard at all, and the built-in software has come a LONG way in the past 4-5 years! --- The 8Mg of RAM may seem like a lot, but it was only a few years ago that I bought a laptop with a 2 Gig hard drive and couldn't imagine how I could EVER fill it up! Moral: Always buy fast machines with big memories! I hope other users enjoy their Handspring Visor Platinum as much as I am enjoying mine!

The handspring visor platinum is being returned today for a Palm colored screen. The visor's screen is hard to view and the backlight does not provide enough contrast. As well, I received a low battery warning and within minutes of use, it turned off. After replacing the batteries, I found that my information was deleted. This is just not acceptable. If it requires batteries, there should be a back up battery available as in Casio products.I am going to buy a palm with colored screen and rechargeable batteries.

As an upgrade to the Visor Deluxe it is obviously the same thing but faster. Noticeably faster than any other Palm device out there, but not really amazing. You will probably only see a big difference in computationally-intensive applications, or those with large databases, like Kanji Hanabi. The speed is the best thing about this product. The worst thing about this product is the platinum case. Instead of the translucent plastic of the Deluxe model it is a painted gray plastic, and when that paint wears off (and it will) this thing is going to look like a cheap toy that's ready for the trash. The battery compartment cover doesn't fit properly - it rattles. I expect more in a... device. The clip-on cover is still a problem. Whereas the Palm III series cover flips back on a hinge, leaving a hand free for the stylus, the Handspring cover comes off. You can turn the unit over and clip it on the back, or put it down somewhere, but you have to do something with it before you can write. A clumsy design. The big thing with Visor is of course Springboard modules. I can forgive the cover for the ability to plug in GPS, Modem, MP3, software, extra memory or even a digital camera or a phone. Palm has nothing to rival this, and now a year after launch some really useful Springboards are appearing, although some are ridiculously priced -... for a 64M MP3 module!Apart from that... the device is very light (I was surprised to open the shipping container and find it inside, it felt far too light to contain a Visor) and includes batteries, cradle, software CD, brief guide and a few product pamphlets. The feel of the screen is not as smooth or pleasant as that of my Palm IIIe but I expect it will get better with use.The included software installed and performed a hotsync on my Windows 2000 USB/Office 2000 system without a single problem. USB hotsync is FAST.Unfortunately Handspring politely declined to help when I asked if I could get a set of translucent plastic for my Platinum. It would be best to see one of these before buying, or be prepared to return it if unhappy. It REALLY feels cheap and nasty. This will be an excellent travelling email/authoring package with the Targus folding keyboard, RhinoSkin Ti slider case and CardAccess Thinmodem - unless I decide Ihate this plastic so much that I return it for a Visor Deluxe instead.
