What are the characteristics of a good farrier file rasp?

Mini Rasp Hoof File Equine Hoof Rasp

Decarbonization

  • Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and decarburization occurs when the file blank is annealed because of the loss of surface carbon due to high temperature. Because after the carbon is lost, the rest is iron, so if the decarburized part cannot be completely ground off when the surface of the file is polished, the cutting ability of the final produced file will be greatly reduced.
  • After all, the hardness of iron is much lower than that of steel. Of course, the performance of iron filing things on the surface cannot be compared with that of steel.
  • Our files require 100% removal of the decarburized layer and are ground by a grinder, which ensures the performance of the file and increases its life.

Heat treatment

  • The biggest indicator of a file is the angle of the tooth pattern. A good farrier file must ensure that the file is sharp and smooth chip removal.
  • If it is only sharp, it is easy to pinch the sundries under the file, and you have to clean the surface in time, otherwise you won't be able to continue work after it's full of debris. If the chip removal is smooth but the file is not sharp, it will not work properly.
  • We continue to test and improve the tooth pattern of the farrier file and provide conditions and equipment for creating a professional farrier horseshoe file.

Tooth pattern

  • The file needs to be quenched after chopping the teeth. We require that the hardness must be above HRC62, so that the produced file can ensure the sharpness of the cutting. However, because the higher the hardness requirements during quenching, the temperature control needs to be extremely rigorous.
  • Once there is a deviation, it is easy to cause a whole batch of files to crack (it means the file can be broken into several pieces after a hard knock). So some manufacturers in order to save costs, the quenching hardness of the file will be reduced. Once the hardness decreases, the cutting and other elements will naturally be lowered.
  • We strictly follows the system of one-by-one inspection, which not only ensures that the hardness of the file meets the standard, but also ensures that the cracked file will not flow out into our esteemed farrier customers.

This was purchased as a gift for a beginner farrier. He is using it and likes it.

It works… so hard to choose a rasp from the reviews. I don’t regret getting this one. It’s sharp and a handy size.

This is a decent quality hoof rasp that is shorter, which makes it easier for me to handle, and just makes sense when I’m using it on my miniature horse. I have no complaints whatsoever.
