I purchased this step bit for a drinking water faucet installation in a stainless steel sink. It performed flawlessly with minimal pressure applied to the drill. Excellent value!!!!

I always have my doubts when purchasing lower priced step bits. These guys, although not cheap werenot as much as some of the big name stuff. These bits were surprisingly sharp and very easy to cut smoothly through 3mm aluminum plate. I haven't tried steel yet but it will come soon enough and I'll add onto the review. After a dozen 3/4 inch holes, the bit was as sharp as when it arrived. This in itself is what a good tool should do so I have positive feelings about surviving mild steel. With aluminum, take your time and keep the pressure steady. I heard somewhere to cut aluminum at almost the same speeds one would cut wood. It works :)

These are not the cheap single flute cutters and consequently they cut quickly and smoothly. And after extensive use in thick (well thicker than I'd expect a step drill to work with) steel they are all three good for more.

I recently used the HIGHFIRE 1/4"-3/4” M35 Cobalt Step Drill Bit with three spiral flutes and a hex shank for a few projects. Here’s my assessment of its performance.Drilling Efficiency:The step design of the drill bit is highly efficient. It allows for drilling holes of various sizes without needing to change bits, which is a significant time-saver. The transitions between steps are smooth, making it easy to achieve precise hole sizes.Material and Durability:The M35 cobalt construction of the bit is a standout feature. It's noticeably durable and maintains its sharpness even after multiple uses. This material is known for its high resistance to heat and wear, which was evident in the way it handled drilling through tougher materials.Flute Design:The three spiral flutes are designed well, aiding in efficient chip removal and reducing friction. This design contributes to a smoother drilling experience and seems to help extend the life of the bit.Hex Shank:The hex shank provides a good grip and fits securely in the drill chuck. This design minimizes slippage and ensures stability during drilling, which is crucial for accuracy and safety.Versatility:This drill bit is quite versatile. It’s suitable for drilling through various materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. This makes it a valuable tool for a wide range of projects.Performance in Tough Materials:While it performs admirably in most materials, its effectiveness in very tough or thick metal might be slightly limited compared to more specialized bits. However, for general use and moderately tough materials, it does an excellent job.Overall:The HIGHFIRE M35 Cobalt Step Drill Bit is a solid choice for anyone looking for a versatile, durable, and efficient drill bit. Its design and material make it suitable for a range of drilling tasks, and it offers good value for its performance. Just be mindful of its limitations in extremely tough materials, but for most standard applications, it's a reliable and effective tool.

The hex shank secures well into the chuck. The length of each step is reasonably long, which allows for symmetrical holes to be cut into material about 3/8" thick (when drilled from front and back). I think the spiral flutes do aid with bit movement, although it might also tend to allow some materials to build up in the channels a bit easier, making progress actually slower for things like thick wood. But these are handy one-size-fits-all solutions to have onhand.

Multiple cutting facets enable this bit to quickly start and drill through materials. There is a hex shank that grips in drills well or can be inserted into a driver bit. The coating hopefully will hold up well and lead to a long life. I like the plastic case so it's not rattling around in my drill & driver bag.As an electrician and wood worker, drill bits are my most used tool accessory. This one looks like a winner.*EDIT- I've been using this for a while and it's a champ! Fast cutting and clean cutting.
