What is it?

Transfer Case Shift Motor is a part of some vehicle’s four-wheel drive (4WD) system and is responsible for switching between the vehicle's different two and four-wheel drive options.

It is a small electric motor that moves parts within the transfer case itself to activate the various modes of the 4WD system.

If the transfer case motor is not functioning, then you may find yourself unable to shift into or out of 4WD.

This could be a big problem if the system fails to activate in an off-road or bad weather situation.

Therefore, getting it replaced quickly is vital.

Your factory switch should have an option for Auto 4WD, 2 High, 4 High, and 4 Low. If your switch looks like the one above verify the electrical connector on your factory Shift Encoder Motor. The connector should be an 8 pin connector consisting of 4 pins in row 1 and 3 pins in row 2.

How to replace the Transfer Case Shift Motor?

Transfer case shift motor is fairly easy to access and replacing it is within the reach of the do-it-yourselfer.

You may have to remove the front driveshaft in order to access the shift motor.

In order to remove the shift motor and install the new one, you’ll need to get the transfer case shifted into its neutral position.

You should be able to do this by turning the transfer case shift shaft with a crescent wrench.

Other than that, you’ll just need to disconnect the electrical connections, unbolt the old shift motor, and bolt on and reconnect the new one.

3

NOTE:

Make sure transfer case is in neutral prior to disconnecting battery. if needed, this can be done manually after removal of failed part. DO NOT change the position of the transfer case motor to line up with your transfer case. ONLY change the position of the transfer case to line up with the motor. To "program" the encoder motor press the e-brake, press and hold your brake pedal, turn your key to accessory and put your transmission in neutral then select 2hi, 4hi, or 4lo or even auto 4wd and wait a sec and it'll go to your selection. The splines must line up exactly. It took a little bit to adjust the transfer case splines very slightly to get it line up.

Update so we just tore this piece apart and found a ton of corrosion and rust mind you this has only been on our suburban for 2 weeks it worked one time to put it in a four-wheel drive and then has not worked since we thought it had to be something else so we replaced the switch and another item but still had the same issue. My husband decided to take it apart and check it to see if he could reset it and line it back up and that is when he found all the corrosion and all the rust that was inside. This piece is not just faulty it is dangerous. We are just a couple days past the 30-day return and now we're out $100 but I feel that this unit was faulty from the get-go and I'm going to contact the seller but I don't expect anything because I've seen the other reviews. Needless to say I do not suggest this at all it is a danger to have on your vehicle. So this encoder motor lasted about a month. Then bam it just stopped. Thought we could save a couple hundred but honestly we just lost a hundred. My husband is a mechanic and has been for over 30 years. He tried this one just to see if it was worth anything but sadly it isn't. Do not recommend.

Exact fit for my 2006 Chevy Tahoe Z71. Works excellent so far. The builders must have done their homework on this. The most common issue with these encoder motors is shortage due to moisture. I was happy to see that this company tackled that issue by completely sealing the unit. Not even the more recognized companies that build this part does that. I would highly recommend purchasing from this company.

This part saved me $200 from any other source, they wanted over $300 for it! It is the exact same part as what they sell. There are some important details here with the exact model of 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 you have. This encoder motor is meant to work with the Transfer Case NVG 246. I had to look under the truck at the transfer case. There was a tag near the bottom rear of the case. Cleaning the tag off a little revealed the information I was looking for. It actually says New Process Gear model 246 D.There is another encoder motor that is similar to this one that works with other 2008 Dodge Ram 1500's. It is for another transfer case. I am not 100% but I think the other unit does not have a cable coming out of the motor as this one does.

Nice encoder. Make sure you scan your vehicle with a scanner that reads transfer case codes. If you lose 4wd it will more than likely be 1 of 6 possible issues. First things to check are the following. In order of easiest to troubleshoot.1. Dirty ground2. Faulty t-case selector switch3. Front diff actuator4. Transfer case module5. Transfer case encoder6. Faulty wiring or plugThere is a lot of information online for each of these. The #1 cause I see is the encoder motor that attaches to the transfer case. Second is either the front diff actuator or a bad ground. GM Yukon, Silverados, Suburbans, etc. All have a ground on the frame rail directly beneath the driver's seat. Use a 10 mm wrench to loosen it up and clean it. Don't pay $400 for any of these items when you can buy this one for $110. Make sure you chock your wheels and engage your emergency brake. Unit comes from the factory in neutral so take a channel lock and make sure the stud coming out if the transfer case has the keyway pointed down. Good luck.
