These disposable, aluminum weighing boats (trays) are ideal for relatively small sediment size fractions. They can hold as much as 50 g of medium to coarse sand (photo) and more for finer grained sediments. The mass of the boats is surprising consistent ranging from 1.46 to 1.50 g with a median of 1.48 g for the seven boats I weighed. While relatively lightweight, the boats maintain their shape when handling sediments samples. The cost per boat at the time of my request was only a little more than US$0.16/boat which means discarding the boats after use is a viable option.PROS• These are inexpensive, aluminum weighing boats (trays).• The mass of each boat is surprisingly consistent varying no more than about 1.48 g ± 0.02 g and, while I would not do it, one could probably dispense with taring the boats.• The boats maintain their shape fairly well, even when full of sediment.CONS• None.
