This microphone can be a standard D6 or a more flatter version. its neutral sound isnt too bad for most applications. The switch makes a a bit of click when switching while moving between the different 'filters'. if you're familiar with the D6 and audix as a whole you'll know its quality and it will make the kick drum sound, but this can do a bit more and i think its a pleasant addition to their lineup.

This is a solid professional high quality microphone for capturing kick drums, percussion, bass, and other low and midrange instruments. The mic is solid aluminum with a steel mesh, so it can withstand a lot of use. It comes with a microphone clip that will screw on to any standard microphone stand. On kick drums you get just enough bass and midrange to give your sound the punch it needs. It also handles percussion very well. There are three filters that start with a very low bass and move to less bass with more midrange in increments that make sense both musically and sonically. I was surprised that one of the filter settings even worked well with a tambourine. This will be one of my often used microphones.

I recently ordered the Audix D6 for my studio to add to my mic collection. This mic is designed to be used with drums, especially the kick drum. Compared to other mics with the same purpose, this mic holds its own. While mic’ing a kick drum inside the hole, it provided a very low–end loud attack with little midrange, providing a great rock drum sound. I found the same low-end thump on toms as well.I also found this mic to be good for mic'ing bass guitar cabs. I did find the low end needed to be rolled off a bit to reduce the boominess. The midrange cut of the mic did stand out here and I felt that I needed to add some midrange or a second mic to mix with it.The D6 is not a general-purpose mic, but it was not intended to be. If you want to mic the drums and get that great rock thump, you should check it out.

I am really happy with this kick drum mic. I get nice punchy results using it. It also has a switch to cut some of the midrange out at various levels, making it a very versatile mic. The design of the mic is eye catching and it is built very well. It comes with a padded case and a mic clip, which is very useful since where it sits in the clip is much more narrow than a traditional mic. So far I've been getting great results and am very happy with this product. I really like audix brand mics!

Having owned two Audix D6 microphones for the past 25 years, as well as several other mics in their lineup, you can be sure when I tell you I know the sound of that microphone, along with the best practices and applications for using it. And in the spirit of full disclosure, I love them when being used as a Kick drum mic as well as in use as a floor tom tom mic. I have used them on bass amplifiers, and as the bottom mic when I'm working with a Leslie Organ speaker. As a Kick drum mic, I have used it as an internal mic, and external mic and also as a batter side outside mic. I love the sound, and I really appreciate how easy it really is to line check a kick drum with minimum effort. I really can't complain about the good 'ol D6... it's been a trusted solution for quite some time! No complaints.SO NOW, Audix has decided to change things up a bit, and they have recently introduced the new and improved D6X... So let's have a look at what makes this bad boy tick.At first blush, it looks like the same old mic that I know and love. The only obvious difference is the inclusion of a filter switch on the output barrel that changes up the frequency response of the microphone. When looking at the filter switch, they have made it really obvious which setting represents the ORIGINAL D6 sound, and I really appreciate that when it's in this position I can just go aherad and use it just like a traditional D6. Good move, guys... I like it.BUT, does it actually SOUND like a good old D6... And the answer is... YES. With this setting it's just like having a session with my old friend. This doesn't disappoint. So lets see what else it can do... Let's check out that middle "balanced" setting, shall we?I pop on some headphones, set the middle position and I take a listen... I also have a standard D6 on another channel so I can compare. What I'm hearing is interesting... The new D6X sounds like a D6 with a little bit more... presence is the word I'm looking for. There have been times when I wished I could get a little more presence, and I have been able to manipulate the EQ to supply SOME of that feeling, but it's nice to have ACTUAL presence instead of some man-made version of it. My DAW cannot reproduce something that doesn't exist, even if it CAN fabricate it when needed. NOTHING beats 'natural' presence and this microphone has it in SPADES. I really like it... I never thought about it being missing, but when ya suddenly have it, you KNOW you wish you had it all along.Moving the D6X over to a bass amp to see how the mic performs there in the 'balanced' setting reveals a similar outcome. Yep, that's a D6... but better. Signature sound, with a little extra. I'm liking this mic a whole lot.On to the next setting and back to the kick drum. Let's see what this is all about.I'm having a hard time putting into words what I'm hearing here. It's not a subtle difference, especially when compared to the traditional D6. It's like a veil has been lifted. What once was just a great kick sound, transformed to a detailed kick sound with the balanced setting, and now with the highest setting it has become analytical in it's detail. Now, it still sounds like a D6, but it sound's like a D6 with an SM57 sitting next to it, blended perfectly with the D6. I think... is that what I'm hearing? I'm not sure.So I grabbed an Audix i5 and placed it next to the original D6 and worked on the relationship between the two mics... This is not exactly what the D6X sounds like, but it's close if I put a high pass filter on the i5 at around 250 hz, or thereabouts. I'm not really sure what I'm getting at, but the ability of a single D6x to sound quite similar to an old school D6 with an i5 in tandem is pretty impressive. There's something about this mic setting that I can't quite put my finger on... but I really like it...So I put it on a 16" floor tom tom, I have a hunch that this will be amazing. And it is pretty special. ALL that extra detail is what's missing when I use a D6 on a floor tom. The D6X brings that to the front, where it belongs.I don't want to go on forever here. Let's come to a conclusion: If you like the D6 of old, I'm pretty sure you're going to love what Audix has done here. It surely IS a D6, but updated to be even more useful in my microphone locker. If you've never been a FAN of the D6, you kind of owe it yourself to give this new incarnation a spin. I can't promise you will love it, but I sure do. This thing takes the D6 to new levels, and expands its usefulness by no small margin.

Audix QUALITY! This is a great sounding drum mic mainly for kick drums but can be used for other pieces, but it really shines in the kick department. The overall tone fits a kick sound quite nicely. Seems almost everything "plosive" in it's direction sounds great and has a "b-dup" tone to it. It's not overly characteristic but this really does make such sound tremendously good. You can use this for anything really, but kick is it's jam... pun intended. What I really like about this version of the AUDIX D6(X) is the 3 stage switch that bends the frequency curve in the middle slighty more or less. The flattest curve sounds rather lowend or homogenized in frequency spectrum, and the more dip you go, the more clear it sounds. The setting with the deepest mid curve is actually very natural sounding, and clean. There are many videos about this mic and it's predecessor, and upon listening to the mic in a live drum kit, you'll see where it really shines... It sounds fantastic.Audix does a fantastic job at making some very great sounding microphones.

This mic does great for capturing the kick drum in a small rehearsal space. Also does well as a bass cab mic! Really appreciate the inclusion of a mic clip adapter.
