I noticed in previous reviews people mentioned a lack of lubrication well there was a heavy coating of oil to the point I had to do a heavy clean. So maybe they listened?There is a taper inside the cylinder which will not affect most people unless they happen to use a strange pencil that matches the diameter on one end but not the other as I happened to try.I do not know if it is convention to have the adjustment screw above the slot for the pencil - however it does mean your pencil can only be as long as the distance between the cylinder and the screw.I bought this as a pair of wing dividers with the option to use it as a compass on occasion. From that point of view it works, it is imperfect, but it works.

- This is a basic tool that holds the angle one sets. I only wish that the pencil holder was large enough to handle the Ultra Fine Point markers.- Also, there is no "stop" for the screw, so it's easy to over-tighten it and end up putting a hole into the pencil. so I slipped a small steel "flap" to distribute the force better.- It *is* definitely hard/sharp enough to scribe.
