What is a Bonsai tree?

bonsai trees, cz grain

Bonsai is a Japanese term derived from two words: "bon," which means "tray" or "shallow container," and "sai," which means "planting" or "to grow." Together, the word "bonsai" refers to the art of growing miniature trees in small containers or trays.

I purchased these starts twice and only 1 actually survived. The first set failure I took responsibility for as I let them dry out on heating mats. Second set arrived looking healthy. Rooted nicely in water then crashed promptly after moving into potting soil for unknown reasons. Normally I have a green thumb

I received the willow bundle with 3 types; Australian, Weeping and Dragon Willow and followed the instructions to put the stems in clean water. I changed the water every 2 or 3 days and when most of them had roots 1.5-2", put them in bonsai potting mix. The Dragon Willows are strong and have been doing well, but the Weeping and Australian Willows began to wither after about a month. They show no signs of life now, so these results are disappointing. I hope the Dragon continues to grow.

These, plus several others, came as cutting with no leaves or roots. I followed the instructions for rooting and in no time all cuttings had roots and leaves. I transplanted to dirt and they have all continued to thrive. These I’m trying outside, gave 3 away as gifts and others are inside. Highly recommend.

I am new to growing bonsai, but I must say I just love it, my best hobby as of now. One thing I will say the first picture is one that I recently purchased and the second picture is one that my son had given me as a gift which he purchased from CZ Grain and I just love, love it. I highly recommend this company. I will purchase a lot more from them

I wanted the weeping most of all but disappointed it isn’t growing well. There’s one tiny green and that’s it. The other two are growing like weeds. I can’t wait to plant them! They said they give more than one each in case they don’t grow but I only got one of each so I truly hope the weeping grows soon!

I got these for a Christmas gift. I got 8 starters, all of which had good root systems already developing, 7 of which made it past the planting stage, and all of those 7 were sprouting strong, healthy greenery just a week or so after being planted in their pots. Three weeks after receiving them, all 7 are firming up their potted roots, and sprouting even more new leaves. If they don't make it after this, it's all on me. I'm going to have to learn about exactly how one goes about all the trimming, wiring, and pruning involved ('ve already read that the weeping variety DOES NOT like wiring), but this little set has given me a great start, and I hope I can do them eventual justice. Really happy with this gift, and--considering what these might turn out to be, and all the enjoyment I foresee in tending them--I think it's a great investment for the price.

After believing I would have a multitude of willows, they all began to die. I included a picture of the most recent one, which you can see has growth that has already decayed in spite of the bark remaining green (somewhat). Most of the trees began to die from the top down. I put them in the fox farms soil, I made sure they developed roots, I watered them as often as the top of the soil had dried, and I made sure not to let the sun scorch them. At the end of it all, I have 2 of the small cuttings that have lived, although they are turning black as well.I’m not sure why the majority began to die. They were watered well, in pots with great drainage, in a variety of depths of soil, covered the bottom in moss on a few for moisture retention and to encourage root growth. I’m extremely disappointed.

This is going to be interesting. Through no fault of the seller, CZ Grain, I didn’t get these cuttings until March 23! I had the package shipped to the wrong address and was unable to pick these cuttings up until one month after they arrived! I have purchased from this seller mulriple times and have only received, rather quickly, quality plant seeds and healthy willow cuttings.I put the cuttings in water immediately. It was obvious these cuttings had been severely neglected - again, by me. The paper towels that are wrapped around the root end of the cuttings were damp and when I attempted to remove the paper, it just peeled away, almost disintegrating as I touched it. The root end of the cuttings were mostly blackened and looked as if there might be a fungus present. Surprisingly, there was quite a bit of growth on most cuttings. Not surprisingly the growth was discolored. Instead of being the healthy green growth that CZ Grain willow cuttings develop when cared for properly, this growth was rather scary looking. These cuttings looked like sci-fi movie props. Some of the growth was all white and looked similar to straight, long potato sprouts rather than willow greenery. Some of the white, sprout like growth had tips that were blackening and curling up (think Wicked Witch of the West after her run-in with the house.) Other growth was black and appeared to have melted back to the base. That growth looked more like odd, mushy tumors.I cut off the blackened, apparently rotten areas at the root end of some of the more hopeless looking pieces. I also trimmed the black, dead looking growth growing out of the cuttings. I then placed the cuttings in jars filled with about two inches of water.Willows are tough but if any of these survive, after a month of no water and no sunlight while wrapped up in drying paper towels, stored in plastic baggies and kept in a closed cardboard box, I will be rather surprised. But nothing ventured nothing gained...if even one of these survives, it will be amazing. If it’s possible (translation: if I can figure out how...,) I will add photos of the cuttings now and then provide an update (with photos) a month from now. I’m sorry I did not think of taking photos when the cuttings first arrived, before I trimmed and placed them in water.Although I am actually looking forward to the challenge of saving the lives of these poor, neglected willow cuttings, I will be reordering them again. This time, I will remember to use the correct address.Again I must stress that CZ Grain provides quality cuttings and the dreadful condition of these cuttings was completely my fault.
