These expander plugs can be used with any type (steel, aluminum, carbon) steerer tubes. They are easier to install than star nuts, and can be removed and reused. This one is as good as any of this type. I think the bolt is stainless steel, which is a plus, although the description does not say as much. I wish the top cap was plain black rather than the logo cap, but it's easy enough to either paint it or remove the paint.

I have no complaints about the cap or the steel bolt. I was primarily after those two pieces. They look good and work fine.I do have a problem with the expander though, as it's based on a very poor design--you'll find identical (and nearly identical) variants available on cheap websites coming straight from China. If you see an expander that looks like this (all silver with dimpled contact area instead of smooth), stay away. This design MAY work fine with carbon and aluminum steerers, but at least with steel steerers, they lack the surface area necessary to grip the sides properly. This is where the dimpled pattern fails miserably, as it doesn't contact enough (surface area) to hold the expander in place when tightening down the stem cap. The expander plug instead gets pulled up into the cap instead of pulling the fork snug. The idea is supposedly that the dimples will grab into the walls of the steerer... but since the plates are made of aluminum, they won't do anything to steel.I've tried to REALLY torque down the expander, but it always pulls up with limited effort (when tightening stem cap). I've tried using carbon fiber paste, but that barely helps. Combine use of CF paste with pushing up on the fork while tightening the cap for best results... it won't be great (minor play in the fork/bearings), but it's better than nothing. For comparison, I tried using my FSA and Reynolds expanders (both of which have SMOOTH contact plates and seat deeper into the stem), and they worked perfectly and didn't need to be torqued into the steerer as much for superior effect.Again, if you have a steel steerer... avoid this expander design like the plague. It is at least somewhat functional with proper technique, but if you're like me, you'll end up wasting a good hour trying to figure out why it isn't working properly... Really nice cap and bolt though!

SO much better than the old "hammer in" nuts! I'll never go back!!! Lines up right, holds the stem tight!👍

Star nuts are light weight but can be problematic to install and over tighten. This jamb style nut solves those issues very well but at the expense of considerable additional weight. Great for those of you that want a bomb proof nut and don’t care about the extra weight.

The carbon fiber finish on the top cap was very dull and lacked finish. I would recommend seeking another CF top cap with a bit better quality. On the other hand, the expander plug seemed solidly constructed and well made, as did the included screw. Despite the quality, it may be difficult to gain the friction necessary with the design of this expander plug as the metal is quite smooth.
