Offering rich 48-bit color and a full 8.5-by-11-inch scanning area, the CanoScan N1240U provides all sorts of creative possibilities for the home user or small office. Optical resolution is an impressive 1,200 x 2,400 dpi, which guarantees crisp detail and clear images. Plus, if your graphics needs require it, the N1240U can take your 1,200 x 2,400 dpi original and mathematically enhance it to 9,600 x 9,600 dpi.

Although the CanoScan stands just over 1 inch high, its unique Z-lid extends easily to make room for thicker originals such as books or magazines, while the single-cord USB connection (cable included) keeps desktops free from clutter. The USB connection also powers the scanner, so no bulky AC adapter is required.

Operation is a snap, thanks to dedicated one-touch buttons for scanning, copying, or e-mailing photos. The N1240U is compatible with both Macintosh and PC systems, and it comes with a one-year limited warranty and Canon's convenient Instant Exchange service.

From the Manufacturer

Impressive. Spectacular. Remarkable. There are many ways to describe this truly affordable scanner that delivers outstanding 1,200 x 2,400 dpi resolution scans. It's called the CanoScan N1240U, and when you consider its numerous innovations that make scanning fast and easy, we think you'll agree that this is one amazing machine. Just over 1 inch high, it uses a single USB cable for power and connection to any compatible Mac or PC. What's more, its three external buttons allow you to scan, copy, or e-mail your images in one step. You can even burn all your photos onto CDs with ease.

Now, it's easier than ever to take advantage of this scanner's superb 48-bit scanning with the color depth and brilliance of 281 trillion possible colors. The accompanying stand allows you to stand up the N1240U scanner on your desk and still use it to scan at any time. Canon's advanced Z-Lid Expansion Top will forever change the way you scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat. The N1240U cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts vertically and lies flat to create the space needed for bulky items, and to help ensure clear scans.

I bought this scanner brand new, at the time, it was compatible with my operating system. I had Windows Vista and then Windows XP and the enclosed CDs had the drivers for both operating systems. When I upgraded to Windows 7, I was told by both Microsoft and Canon that there would be NO driver development for this scanner, but Canon offered me a new scanner for a reduced price - to replace the one I had bought less than a year before. I have relegated this scanner to a computer running Windows XP and have to copy to a thumb drive and then take to my main computer. There are better ways to do this.

I am retrning this scanner to the store for a refund. The main reason is that some snapshots when scanned show a purple shading not present in the original photo. Not every picture, mostly pictures taken in the shade. This is unacceptable. I emailed Tech Support about this purple tinge problem but they, so far, have failed to respond.I had read about this purple issue in some reviews, but not all. My guess is that the users who did not report this problem had not scanned an image that would generate the purple tinge....yet.Other negatives are that the scanner connector cord is very short. It limits scanner placement options. I can't place the scaner on the shelf I used with my old scanner. It requires a special connector so no ordinary USB cable will do.The scanner is noisy, but not objectionably so.The scanner is always on and draws power from the PC through the USB connector. I like to turn equipment on when I want to use it.But the overriding concern is the purple tinge. So I will read reviews about other scanners a lot more carefully now. However, if an occasional purple tinge to your picture is not objectionable to you (maybe purple is your favorite color), then this is a good scanner at a great Amazon price.

Before I purchased this scanner on Amazon I e-mailed the Canon support group and asked if the scanner was FULLY compatible with Windows ME. The response was unequivocal: "Yes, it's fully compatible." So imagine my surprise when I took delivery yesterday (3/4/02) and couldn't get the damn thing to run due to an issue with my "Twain Driver" (no, I don't have a speech impediment). I spent many frustrating hours including two LONG calls to Canon's excellent (I'm serious, they are excellent) tech support.Fellow Window ME users, let me save you a lot of grief.#1 Apparently Norton/Symantec Utilities are somewhat incompatible with Windows ME which hangs up the install process. DEACTIVATE YOUR NORTON/SYMANTEC UTILITIES BEFORE INSTALLATION.#2 In your INF folder there are thousands of 0 kb EOM files. DELETE ALL OEM FILES & THEN DELETE THEM FROM THE RECYCLE BIN ALSO. Warning, this process can take many hours!...

Setup was quick and easy, and the scanner works as advertised. The XP Software included with the scanner gave no difficulties at all. I like the multiple bundles of application software. I can scan photos, magazines, as well as text. The OCR recognition software converts to text with very few problems. I do not find it slow or noisy, and am very pleased with my purchase.

The Canon web site has been promising OS X support fro over a year, but they don't seem interested and have not responded to inquiries. Scanner is OK, but having to start Classic mode every time you use it gets old in a hurry. Mac owners beware!

I waded through all of the info and compared prices before deciding to buy a scanner - a non-essential but desired item for me to use for work(text) and webpages(photos) at home. I wanted good quality without buying unnecessary features or spending more than 100-150 bucks. I bought this scanner in July of 2002. It has absolutely exceeded my expectations. It is lightweight (3lbs or so), stores on its side (something I didn't think I'd like so much), and MAN it gets good detail. Being that I am a big geek, I scanned my hand after purchase to see how much detail would show up - I can read my fingerprints - and inbetween - better than I can see with the naked eye in good lighting. The detail is stunning imho. I use OmniPage Pro 9 for OCRing, and although the Caere software certainly gets much of the credit, the scanner shows enough detail that I get perfect scans often. The software is only as good as what it can read... so my point is that the clarity is impressive. I haven't seen any evidence of the single issue I read about during my research of this scanner - some reddish tones. Your eyes may differ, and as with anything, the manufacturing plant or date may affect color adjustment on some models. I'm not a big fan of Canon (home-use) printers over the years, but this scanner renews my belief that Canon can make a good product.

I fell for this scanner for it's very kool looks and color that matches with my Sony Vaio PC. The whole setup was plug and play and went very well. The software that came with it is excellent(Photoshop Elements). But, me or any Canon Tech support people couldn't help me get this one scan for me. It kept giving Handler Error from Windows Imaging program and TWAIN Source not found from other apps. I replaced it with another one and still had the same problem while all my other USB devices from Intel's webcam that uses TWAIN drivers to digicam and printer worked fine.I had like 5 Ref numbers from cannon(Q133240, 8595085, 8595121, 8599769) support and the final one was supposed to be their top tech person. Wasted about 2 full weekends PLUS about 10 weekday hours on this scanner. I was told by canon that i will get a replacement scanner from service dept from which i get disconnected or forward to another dept who then forward me back to support. I was in this loop for about 5 calls and finally decided to walk back to store and return it and take a break from scanners for some time!!
