As you all probably know, there are two big problems with most performance mutes. Either a) they rattle, or b) they are hard to get on/off (or c) both-! 😖). This mute, my friends, does none of the above!! It fits snugly between the strings, slides on them soundlessly, and fits over the bridge with the greatest ease. It’s a miracle!! Buy two, one for yourself, and one to give the next poor puck-mute-using musician you meet!

Subtle muting isn’t in my repertoire at my stage. Mainly trying to modify the e string so it’s not so harsh or scratchy. Next stop is a new and different e string like a Warchal.

This is not a practice mute- this is a performance mute, and PERFECT for performances! The standard cheap mutes require some pushing and tugging and can cost some time and stress in a performance- all you have to do with this one is simply slide it forward to the bridge, and when you’re done, slide it back towards the fine tuners. That’s IT. This one probably dampens the dynamic by about 20%, but changes the timbre to that lovely muted timbre that our conductors are after. It’s such a fantastic purchase!

I had problems with the previous Spector mute (which I returned), but since it was for a different violin I thought I’d give it a another try. To my amazement, it had exactly the same problem as before - the mute doesn’t mute. Ok, to be fair, it mutes about maybe five percent of sound. I have a decibel meter. I guess I’m going to have buy another Alpine mute. I like the Alpine mute but it costs so much. I don’t understand how a tiny plastic piece can cost $20.
