I installed in an M54B30 (2002 E39). Added a little RTV near the corners where the VANOS unit is. It's been holding well for two years now. No leaks.

Perfect snug fit. Flawless product. After removing the OEM gasket could see how much better this was. The blue color made it easy to check the seal before tightening.

Great Valve Gasket. I love Fel-Pro stuff. Have used their baskets in the past for transmission on my old car. Never had a problem. Bought this one expecting the same and was not let down. Great product, great price, good quality no leaks.

If you have a BMW E46, you will someday find your engine smoking due to a valve cover gasket leak. The soft pliable gasket installed at the factory becomes a hard plastic gasket after several years and no longer seals. It will typically leak at the rear on the passenger (exhaust) side, dripping oil onto the hot exhaust causing a smell at first then most likely smoke. The dealer will clobber you about $500 for this repair, but with a few basic tools you can do it yourself in about an hour for less than $50. Check YouTube for videos. It's really quite simple. The gasket itself is a perfect fit and Fel-Pro is a leader in gaskets, they have been for many, many years so quality is not an issue. Don't let the dealer tell you that you need an official BMW gasket, that's nonsense. You may also need a grommet kit, Fel-Pro ES 72490 to complete the job. These are the 15 grommets that go on the bolts holding down the valve cover. They will probably be OK, but since you have them off, it's a good idea to replace them now. So save some money and do this repair yourself. Think of what you could buy with the money you just saved!
