It's a little janky, and a bit tall, but it works okay. The height makes it un wieldy, and difficult to get the gripper inside the grates.

I wasn't sure how well this would work - I'm very impressed. I used it on both the light-weight stainless grill and the heavy-weight cast iron grill - works great on both of them! Holds them very firmly even when not centered - again, very impressed by how securely this tool lifts up a heavy grill. I wanted this tool to adjust the grills when they are hot OR before they're hot when they are still covered with gunk from the last time I used the grills. Very please. I think I can safely lift a grill loaded with food without much, if any, risk of a grill slipping and the food falling. Again, this tool lifts a heavy grill far more firmly than I thought possible.
