Was a good guide for my 5 day camping trip to Isla Espiritu Santo with my girlfriend and another couple in tandem kayaks.

The text provided good information. I was able to go into the Loreto National Parque office and ask for what I needed even though the guy there didn't speak any English and my Spanish is fairly nonexistent. The limitation was the that the binding of this book is incredibly shoddy. The new book that we purchased fell apart within minutes of when we received it.

This is a great book for planning and using on your trip in Baja. I've used it twice, first time on a 10 day trip and for my last solo 21 day trip down the coast and islands. Packed with important info. The binding tends to fall apart but the quality of the info far out weighs this physical flaw.

Great book. You can really tell that the author has been to the places he is writing about. Greattips on camping, kayaking and where to avoid. This book is must for planning a trip to the Baja.

I bought this book after a recent kayaking trip to Baja. I saw a copy of the book at camp on Magdalena Bay run by a tour outfitter. It helped me in writing my travel journal as I didn’t know or forgot many of the places we went. I was able to easily retrace our journey using the aerial photographs and maps. It makes me want to plan a trip to Baja again. The author signing a personal copy to me was a bonus.

Just wanted to say what a great book this is...just came back from Baja and had a great time. This book really help us plan our routes and gave us the confidence to go father knowing that there will be a place to camp. The lay out of the book is exciting and very colorful. I would recommend to my friends (if they where into kayaking) We traveled to Loreto by car and had no troubles. Montazuma's revenge did strike the last couple nights though so watch out.

Dave Eckhardt's book fills a longstanding gap in the need for an accurate guidebook to sea kayaking in the Cortez. He makes note of most of the good camping and landing beaches along the cortez coastline, what types of protection they offer, normal wind and wave conditions to be expected, etc. He seems, however, to have entirely missed the point that many of the areas he writes about are critical habitat for various species, especially in the springtime, and that the Mexican Government does not want gringos making a mess of their ecosystems by, for instance, sleeping on nesting beaches in the spring when chicks and fledgling birds are highly vulnerable. His listing of a "campsite" on Isla Gonzaga, for example, is a definite "Illegal to sleep on this island at any time" governmentally protected site. He even goes so far as to put quotations around the word "Protected" when mentioning the status of these types of habitats, as if this legal designation is of no significance to him.Basically, this book has more info on kayaking these stretches of the Cortez than any other publication to date, but please, people, don't be ugly, careless gringos sleeping on protected beaches. Show some respect.Dave also neglects to cover the northernmost tour in the Cortez, the infamous but beautiful, and much maligned mudflats section from Golfo de Santa Clara to San Felipe. Basically, Dave E. has written a useful book for newcomers to the world of sea kayaking in the Cortez, but there are definitely some missing pieces and certainly a lack of respect for the fragility of these ecosystems, as well as the governmental agencies tasked with protecting these places for future generations.

Although Baja is one of the world's top sea kayaking destinations, there were no decent books on this subject out there until this one came along. The photos and descriptions provide key information for anyone planning a self-supported trip with recommendations on safe landings, good camp spots and other essential details for an extended kayaking trip to this part of the world.
