Combining two tools into one, a splitting maul and a soft-face mallet of the highest professional quality, Halder's SIMPLEX splitting maul offers a significant savings in cost compared to the individual purchases of the tools. The top-tier quality of the product has been confirmed by the committee for forestry work and forestry technology (KWF). Made from high-grade carbon steel, the drop-forged splitting insert delivers extremely high splitting action thanks to its turned nose. This effect is amplified by its total weight of 4,100g and high top heaviness. The leather cutting protection prevents injury during transport. The superplastic insert with D60mm is a medium hard plastic insert made of extruded and extremely homogeneous material. Compared to injection moulded plastic inserts, it is therefore considerably more wear-resistant and durable. Using the soft side when wedging the wood open entirely eliminates the risk of injury from metal splinters. What is more, the service life of plastic and aluminium wedges is extended substantially. Made of cast iron, the housing comes with an integrated handle protection sleeve that provides for a high level of break resistance. The long-fibre and ultra durable hickory handle is varnished and shaped ergonomically. In line with the smart SIMPLEX principle, all components are replaceable and can be retrofitted. This translates to savings in both money and resources.

This comes with a great sheath, and was well packed in heavy wrapping paper. The head needed a couple of swipes with a file to remove the factory burr, and then it's extremely sharp! When you use the wedge, get your technique down first to hit the same spot every time. And don't let your neighbor use it. Ever.Swing it from the end of the handle, don't choke up on it. Give it all you have, and the force will either send the pieces flying. Sure, knots will slow things down. This maul delivers more force on the wood than the Fiskars, because the bit is half the height. Also, buy the wedge at the same time. If you need this maul, you'll also need the wedge.

Wow, this is the Cadillac of splitting mauls..! I've used many different axes and mauls over the years and the Halder maul is an amazing tool. At 9 pounds, this thing is a beast, but it doesn't seem heavy to swing for some reason. The thick hickory handle is high quality and I really like the metal over-strike protection.A bit pricey, but this maul is high quality and will last a lifetime if taken care of. The parts are all replaceable as well, which is a very nice feature. Gotta love German engineering and manufacturing..!

For context, I split 6-7 cords of maple and oak every year, and have been splitting wood by hand for >20 years. I use a splitter when I rush or for really annoying pieces, but generally enjoy splitting by hand for the exercise. I'm 6'4" so this maul really gets moving when I swing it. I have no issues with 24-30" oaks - it's rare that the first split takes 3 swings. After the first split, it's always one swing.I'm very happy with the quality of the axe, the weight, and the performance. This is my favorite maul.
