Overview
Heil Sound is pleased to introduce the PR 77D, a large-diaphragm microphone designed to provide focused directionality, full-range response, and a vintage appearance for use in podcast, broadcast, recording, and live stage applications. It features a classic side-address design based upon popular RCA microphones from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Its cardioid polar pattern delivers 40 dB of attenuation 180° off-axis, resulting in a tight pickup area and minimized bleed. The PR 77D is an updated version of the PR 77 from Heil Sound. The Heil PR 77D features a two-position switch allowing the selection of the best characteristics of voice or music. The voice position rolls the audio off at 120 Hz at -6 dB per octave while the music selection removes the filter and the entire audio spectrum of 60 Hz to 16 kHz is present. It comes with TT-ISO Isolating Desktop Microphone Stand from Auray is designed to minimize unwanted vibrations from affecting your microphone by decoupling the stand from your desktop or studio floor. It is optimized for use in podcasting, kick drum, and guitar amplifier miking applications. Plus a XLR-XLR Cable.

Got the desktop bundle for use with a ham radio. The Good: PR-77D Microphone and included XLR cable (that I'll use with a different mic). The Bad: Why did they include the Auray base with this particular microphone? The mediocre construction, not withstanding, it has two issues:1) it needs a locking nut for the microphone (like the LUORNG 4PCS 5/8"-27) but that isn't a show stopper.2) A typical desk is approx 30" tall, the desk I am using the mic at is 28" tall. With the vertically mounted mic at the lowest it can go on the base, the mic element is about at forehead level (I'm 5'10'). The mic and base are a mismatch hence one star lost. To be fair, the base might work OK with a horizontally mounted mic.I'll soon be looking for a different base or a boom to use with this mic.

Great look, and it sounds very good with a large proximity effect. Get in close to the mic and you can sound really deep and warm. One of the nicest sounding mics for broadcast or podcasts I've ever heard. It has the PR40 element in it which is known for sounding like a Condenser mic. Sounds great without any eq.There are problems however:1. The internal shock mount is very lacking, every sound from your desk or handling transfers directly. It is too easy to make thumps and bumps come right through. The voice high pass filter does not help much with this.2. The internal pop filter is really weak. There is no way you can speak directly into this mic without pops, unless you speak off axis, back away to about 6 inches, or are very very skilled at minimizing pops. Even with the Voice mode turned on, it really does not filter the pops out. It would be a shame to have to use a pop filter with this mic, it would defeat the purpose of its amazing looks.3. I had to return mine due to a grounding issue, where the mic case was not connected, so there was loud buzzing whenever it was touched. I'm sure they will fix this however, as Heil Sound is a great company.

Using as a studio mic in AM radio broadcasting, in Medium Sized market. Good pattern and response. Great price. HAM's this mic would be welcome in your shack, as well!
