I already own a couple of Ibex violin planes...a 12mm and a 18mm and used them to shape the braces when voicing my guitar soundboards. In doing so, I've found the 18mm to be to big for my needs, the 12mm a good size for most brace shaping, but always needing a smaller size. So I finally bought the 10mm Ibex plane.

I've thought many times about getting a finger plane, but have found other ways to get the job done. Now that I have one i don't need to improvise any more. This beautifully made plane shaves the finest little bit at a pass and has a radiused sole so I can make inside curves. I sharpened the blade using 600 then 1000 grit w/d paper on a plate glass surface. Sharp as a new razor blade.

I purchased this and an 18mm plane. They are my first violin planes so I have nothing else to compare against, but they are wonderful tools. I wasn't sure if they would be as useful as I hoped but they were, especially the 18mm. I am using them for carving arched banjo resonators, and may use them for archtop guitars, too. Now that I have them, I would have a hard time doing without. The blade on the 18mm was profiled to the radius of the casting perfectly. It needed a final honing, which is expected from any type of plane. On the 10mm, the blade was far flatter than the casting when I received it, so that the edges of the blade would dig into the wood. So it took a bit more effort to re-grind it to a proper profile. But now that it is done, it works very well, although I find myself using it far less than the 18mm.Adjusting the blade on both planes can be tricky, as there is no micro adjustment as on a hand or block plane. Getting it dialed in to take off just enough, takes some time, but once there, it stays put. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.
