Got a 55g rain barrel I put a spigot on and a hose filter and then have this valve in the top of my 5g chicken waterer and it has kept the bucket full without issues so far. Saves me from having to manually fill my waterer. Will buy more for other setups.

I like water features in my backyard, and one of my favorites has been a birdbath equipped with a solar fountain with which I've equipped an automatic filling system using a float valve. Until this year, I'd been using an old concrete birdbath, which is shown in the background in one of the attached images. On this one, I had a bowl-mounted float valve that was plumbed to a section of garden hose draped over our flower trellis. Whenever evaporation, birds, or the fountain caused the water level to drop, the float valve would open and provide a shot of fresh water to replenish the supply. It worked great! This year, I bought a new inexpensive plastic/resin birdbath and my first thought was to adapt the auto water refill system to it, which would have required a modification to the rim of the birdbath. But I started looking at float valves here on Amazon, saw this Joywayus 304 Stainless Steel Float Valve, and decided to design a new system that didn't have to be attached to the birdbath, itself. What I came up with is shown in its early testing phase. The valve is mounted in the top of our old cat watering bowl supply bottle and can (barely) be seen below the black domed lid in the close-up picture of the bottle. The 1/2 threaded end of the valve connects to a female PVC adapter with a hose barb that connects to the garden hose water supply. The system works like a water level. The height of the bottle is set such that the water in it establishes the amount of water in the birdbath bowl. (Water seeks its own level!) If the water in the water in the birdbath is lowered, water from the bottle flows into the birdbath, eventually leveling off the two. If the water in the bottle lowers past the float valve's threshold, the valve opens and replenishes the supply in the bottle with a shot of water. The flow to equalize the height of the water in the bottle and the birdbath is gentle and slow enough that it doesn't disturb any visiting birds, the way my older one would frighten them away with a sudden burst of water. So far, the system is working well and reliably. The valve actuates infrequently and for only a fraction of a second each time, as the flow through it has impressive force and volume. I expect that it will last for several years, given the stainless steel construction, and hope it doesn't require much cleaning during the hot summer months. If algae becomes a problem, I'll have to figure out how to deal with it.So far, liking the Joywayus 304 Stainless Steel Float Valve very much!
