These didn’t come with all the connectors needed, tried to improvise and put them in the water, only for them to just sink

Seems to work well. It is kind of a pain to assemble though.

They're not bouyant. They rely on water's surface tension to ride on top of the water. They will sink to the bottom and not come up on their if you don't carefully place the level on the water. On a big pond you can't reach across and pick them up when they sink they' be useless.

I liked the idea of being able to set these on the margin of pond (kind of like see through lily pads) without having to use netting netting but they do not float. Tried to stuff some of the holes with black foam pipe covers to help provide buoyancy but am not a fan of the asthestics of that alternative in my scenery. Partial floating of some pieces prevent fish from reaching food on surface. Noticed frogs struggling to get out of water as well. If I had turtles in my pond, I can easily see them getting thier heads stuck in between rungs of the web. Doesn't stop heron from getting in pond and eating my fish which was the goal so this experiment is a FAIL!! Want my money back.

I have a small koi pond, 8 ft circle, and a pack of 20 barely surrounded the perimeter 1 piece deep. This product attempts to satisfy several goals (open area-but not too open to keep long bird beaks out, floating-but not too buoyant to keep birds from walking on top, etc,) and seems to marginally accomplish those goals. Floating in the water, almost unseen, is an appealing trait. The connector "system" with clips is cumbersome-if not placed correctly, the clips move and do not secure well. They are a bit annoying, and I used some thin wire to actually secure the entire 20 piece "ring" to the pond's perimeter. This "deterrent system" is ripe for product improvement. Will some bright DIY hobbyist out there step up to the challenge of making a "so-so" product even better? Koi pond owners need a better alternative.

I've been looking for something to keep the heron out of my pond. THIS WORKS SO FAR. Normally he would get breakfast, lunch & dinner at my pond. I see where he has tried 2 times since I've been using them, but he did not get anything. I think he's finally been outsmarted. They're in my pond now (4 degrees). Don't know how they'll hold up to being frozen all winter, but a small price to pay to keep him out. If need be will replace in the spring. People complained about snapping them together, but they're actually very easy, there is a wide side & a thin side, use the thin side to put the clips into and it goes right in. I will buy another set before winter is through just in case I need it. I usually buy about 50-100 fish because I know most will go to the heron, hopefully, no more feeding him, just enjoying for myself.

We have been fending off a heron for 4 seasons now using a tented net. It's effective but unsightly and just sucked the fun out of the pond since it basically obscures the fish and makes plant tending a chore. Our pond is 1600 gallons with uneven rock edges and straight sides. I created a two layer grid using the clips and strengthening it with zip ties so I can pick it up when necessary. To maintain the float ( we have agitated water from an aerator and waterfall), I cut up a small grey pipe insulator foam tube (cheap at the hardware store) and used 3/4" pieces randomly like floats. The tube is longer, cheaper and smaller than a noodle and has a cut edge that will self seal to close around a guard edge. It took a while to create an acceptable pattern but it's worth the effort. The guards stay just below the water and practically disappear. The foam circles do sit partially above the water but being grey, the visual is OK.
