This reel has been more than sufficient for beach flying, so I'm happy with it. It has more than enough line capacity for a nice and high kite. It is a solid quality build while still being a good value. The reel comes assembled and spooled, so it functions right out of the package.

I ordered the SGftre Kite Reel With String to try it out and see how it would work with our nicer and larger kites. I ordered the 9 inch, green and yellow reel, thinking the more string the better, not really thinking about how massive that reel would be. In hind sight, I would order the smaller version, as it would be easier for children to use, but my husband it happy taking over this one.Out of the box, you get a reel made from hard ABS plastic, that is already strung with triple strand kite string. The end of the string has a nice metal locking clasp on a swivel, for easy attachment to your kite. The "chute" where the string comes out is smooth and rounded so it will not create friction, nor fray the kite string. Additionally, the reel has a built in, adult sized hand grip and a large turning knob, making it really easy to control your kite, even in heavy winds. There is also a small locking mechanism on the reel to keep your string from unravelling when not in use.Overall, the SGftre Kite Reel With String is very sturdy and well made, with a comfortable ergonomic hand grip. The kite string is yellow, triple strand, and has a metal clasp on a swivel at the end for each kite attachment. The hand grip is ergonomic and comfortable to use over a long period of time. This is definitely the "Mercedes" of kite reels and it deserves five stars.

This is super intimidating coming from the included 100 ft lines. But when properly done it was pretty easy to use. When not properly done it was a tangled mess. On my first try I got all 800 get out. The kite was staining hard but everything held fine. A bit hard to reel in at that length. Unfortunately I let some kids reel in a bit and the wound backwards just a bit which led to a big tangle and 45 minutes of sorting. Don't let it get slack. I wonder if removing the feeder eye would fix that problem. Also, I have big hands, I should have got the bigger wheel, lots of hand cramps. I very quickly learned that I need to trim nails before using it. Gloves aren't a bad idea either with how tight the string gets. Still, great idea, sturdy build, great string. Just don't wheel it backwards.

This winder makes kite flying (especially reeling back in) soooooo much more fun. It's still a lot of work, like 4-6 minutes of reeling to bring it back in from fully unreeled, but it MUCH safer (no grabbing the string) and MUCH faster than the old end-over-end kite winders. This 9" / 1000ft model is probably best for teens/adults. Smaller kids can use it with help. There is a small plastic locking lug that I think might be the part to fail (see picture) but so far its held up in pretty high winds so no star loss there. You can also just grab the outer reel to "lock" the winder.I've included a photo comparing the smaller 7" / 600ft reel, which is a better fit for 7-10 year olds or smaller kids. They still might need some help but it's not as heavy. The small winder uses loose ball in a bearing configuration while the larger winder uses ball bearings on bolts through the assembly. You can see the bearings in the gap between the center handle and the reel. As long as the plastic holds up I think the ball-bearings on bolts is better constructions. The one thing that would be nice to have is a braking mechanism. Using your hand to brake as you let out line gets hot pretty quick. Not sure how they would implement it without inventing a wear problem but it would make unreeling faster and more exciting.

Anyone who has ever used the standard handle string reel that comes with most lower end kites knows that it is not the most kid friendly device or the most convenient to let out or reel in. This high quality reel makes it far easier for anyone from novice to advance to fly their kite easily and retrieve it easier. The kite string on this is a little heavier duty than you would see from your lower end kites being about double the thickness of what I would consider the standard string making this a great choice for larger kites or heavier winds. The real is very well constructed and has great motion. The handle to the reel acts both as the knob to reel in and let out, as well as the lock to fix the string distance where you want it. The handle is very ergonomical and fits well with a good strong grip that both adults and younger kids can manage. If you're looking to upgrade your kite experience by acquiring a more advanced reel with some stronger string and technologies that make the experience more enjoyable and more convenient, you have found the device you're looking for. I highly anticipate getting many years of use out of this before needing to replace the string or any of the components with it. I also believe this comes in at a very fair price for the high quality of construction of this device. Highly recommended.
