Do NOT buy this for rib or side protection. The picture is very deceptive as this has no side protection at the rib area other than a tiny bit of turn-in at the end. I returned this at my expense.

There's only one good way to test the effectiveness of a chest protector. Unfortunately, I had that opportunity today. There is no doubt that the quality of the protective materials is great. The problem is the design. As I looked at the design of the 5.5 Pro, I kept asking myself "What were they thinking?" Actually, the chest and back protection are good. Though, I personally think the picture of the protector used by Leatt is deceptive. It makes the protector appear to have rib protection than it actually has - you have to buy the HD version for the extra rib protection. The primary design flaws have to do with shoulder and upper arm protection - which is why I have an ice pack on my shoulder at this moment. I can only guess that Leatt was trying to design a shoulder pad which was very adjustable and removable (why would anyone want to remove protection?). But the result was protection that is not secure and uncomfortable. The shoulder pads in the current model are attached with a plastic clasp which move along a sliding attachment. The minor effect is that, when wearing a hydration pack, the pack-straps sit on top of the plastic clasp. It produces a similar effect to having a rock in your shoe all day. After a day ride, my shoulder is sore for another day due to the clasp digging into my shoulder all day. A more serious problem with the design is that the pads do not stay in place. There's so much adjustability built in that the shoulder pads are not secure. There is also no protection at the top of the shoulder. If the pads had stayed in place, my shoulder wouldn't be bothering me now. Some other "What were they thinking?" design issues are the strap around the bicep and the bicep padding. The strap around the bicep, attached to the shoulder pad, is very small. I'm 6' and 175 and the straps barely fit around my arm. The upper-arm guard is strangely attached to the front of the shoulder pad at about a 30 degree angle. My upper arm, like most, is directly below my shoulder. So I have to un-attach the pad from the shoulder pad to wear it on my bicep. This protector looks great in the picture. I only wish it worked as well.
