I'm recording a new All Too Human album and I bought a 13 x 7 Universal to allow more room for double bass pedals and a crowded kit. The first day I tuned this up, even with the cheap Ludwig coated head, I found it had a wonderfully musical overtone ring, but equally surprising was the thick crack and deep fundamental note this drum puts out. The sensitivity for ghost notes is extremely precise. When I am mixing snare, I need all of those elements to get the snare to cut through a heavy mix. You'd think you'd have to give up a lot to move down to a 13 but that's not the case. The 7 inch depth helps the fatness and the fit, finish and strength of tuning tubes and other hardware allows for some crazy high tuning. All in all, now one of my favorite snare drums.
