My nearly 20-year-old Kenmore Coldspot started acting up. I called in a repair guy to hopefully save my big ol' beauty.Turns out the fridge was not defrosting and the vents between the freezer and fridge had frozen over, so air was not circulating to the fridge at all. The back panel of the freezer was covered in snow and when opened up, the whole thing was buried in ice. It took some time to clear, so it was obvious the defroster was not working. The repair man found the Adaptive Defrost Control part at Whirlpool for $218, but was sure it could be found for less. He said they really don't make these new anymore, so any part was likely going to be rebuilt. I found this one which seemed sketchy in comparison of price, but the repair man said it looked ok to him, especially with a two year warranty. The part came next day and was installed in just a few minutes. This part saved me a bundle and I'm so glad I get to keep my refrigerator. They just don't make em like they used to!The part has been installed for just a couple days, but so far so good!

My refrigerator Freezer would frost over every 2 weeks. I determined it was not the Defrost Thermostat or the Defrost Coil. The module would have cost over $200 from an OEM dealer so I took a chance on this part as it was much less expensive. It has been a month and no frost. I have my Refrigerator back.

Be sure to unplug the refrigerator before starting the installation. Failure to do so may result is all sorts of nasty stuff happening. The new board may not fully resemble the old board as there have been some improvements in the manufacture of this board. Note that the connectors are keyed so you can't mix the connections up. Installation was relatively easy. It took me about 20 minutes.YouTube videos to the rescue as usual. Taking the time to watch one or two videos will make your life a lot easier.

So our freezer was icing over and then not cooling well because the evaporator was entombed in ice. I defrosted it with a hair dryer, but then it iced again (see youtube videos on defrosting a freezer). I checked the door seal, that was good (and you can tell by the pull it takes to open the door - you should 'feel' the door suck a little air when you open it). I checked the thermostat that is attached on the evaporator coils, and it tested good. There are lots of youtube videos on that, and it's easy with a multi tester. The only thing left is the timer. Well our refrigerator is fancy, and has an actual circuit board, and not just a clock-work timer. The circuit board controls the heating element that periodically heats up the evaporator in the freezer section to keep ice from forming by melting it off. This circuit board is not the identical Whirlpool part, but it's the part Whirlpool said replaced the part in our refrigerator. It went in fine, plugged up fine, and it now works. Word of caution- if your freezer is iced over enough that ice-cream is soft or 'melty', and you replace your board with this part (or whatever part is keeping the heating element from working) - obviously unplug it first, but also you may want to defrost the freezer yourself (with a hair dryer and towels to catch the melted water) before replacing the part. I didn't do that, and the heater came on to melt all the ice that built up over two weeks, (as it's supposed to) and that made a lot of water that dripped down into the refrigerator part. So I had to sop up water in the refrigerator part from all the melted ice from the freezer, but overall it's worth it, and has worked fine since. Whirlpool wanted over $300 for the part, so this is a deal at $50. Much cheaper than a new refrigerator or hiring someone to do it for you.
