About this item

  • Includes 2pc NESDR Nano 2 SDRs. Each SDR is lab-calibrated and EEPROM-programmed for simple Stratux software setup.
  • The small size of the NESDR Nano series of SDRs ensures your embedded application has a footprint as small as possible.
  • Each SDR includes a calibration sticker and adhesive identification labels.
  • 4 ADS-B antennas, 3 RF pigtail cables and 2 RF adapters are included to facilitate a very wide range of installation options for embedded applications.
  • Full 1-year warranty through Nooelec on all bundle components.

This SDR dual-band bundle contains everything you need for a complete ADS-B DIY installation.

2 NESDR Nano 2 DTS are included. These DTS contain an R820T2 tuner as well as a RTL2832U USB interface/demodulator. They have a frequency capacity of about 25 MHz, 1700MHz. The NESDR Nano 2 are very small in size, making them perfect for portable and embedded applications.

Each SDR is lab-calibrated and serialized for easy Stratux installation. Each comes with a calibration certificate with the calibration value and serial number, along with a pair of adhesive labels that you can apply to any location of your choice for easy identification.

There are 2 sets of antennas included. 1 small, medium gain for ultra-portable and cockpit applications and 1 medium size, high-gain for portable and ground applications.

Suitable adapters and RF cables are included to facilitate different installation options.

A split-Y cable is also included for those who wish to use a single antenna to power both DTS. Note that splitting a signal in this matter implies a certain loss. Please take this into account when setting up your system.

There are one parts and 1 year full labor warranty on all components of the bundle.

I've been generally happy with the Nano2 radios over the past year. The heat issues noted by others can be mitigated by removing the plastic covers. That said, I have been using them on a Piaware station for 8+ months at a separate location from my main Piaware. It was always receiving about 60-70% as many aircraft as the main station, which I attributed to the location (below a ridge line). Theoretically, it should have been better; 1 meter of coax between the antenna and radios, instead of 10 meters makes a big difference at these frequencies. When I lost access to the site, I moved it down by the main station, and began using it for experimentation. It was receiving only 40% as many stations as the main receiver, at essentially the same antenna height. Over the past week, I've increased the noise shielding on all components, with no differences noted.Today, a FlightAware "Orange" receiver arrived, and I plugged it in to replace the Nano2 on 1090 MHz.The difference is astounding. Within 2 minutes of booting up, the test station was hearing slightly more stations than my reference station. Maximum receive range jumped from 60-80 miles up to 120+. The difference of having a tuned pre-amp built-in is remarkable. So, while the Nano2 is a good general-purpose SDR, if you're building a Piaware station for FlightAware (and have the space in your installation), go with the FA radios instead.

This SDR has been working very well for me. I have been using it with a variety of software packages including AirSpy gqrx. I have also created a couple of designs with Gnuradio. I have used the SDR with my desktop and a Raspberry Pi 3 with very good results. I originally bought this to make a dedicated ADS-B receiver, but it turned out to be too useful to use for just one thing.I have been using to study the design of software radios and digital filters. I also use it as a general purpose radio. I added a HamItUp converter also with excellent results. With it I can receive AM broadcast, HF, FM broadcast, air traffic, weather, and the various amateur radio bands of interest to me. When I want add features, I simply create a new design in Gnuradio or modify what I already have.I live in an area with several powerful broadcast transmitters within a mile or so. Overloading can be problem. I know others have had a problem with this. It’s important to control the gain. If the gain is too high, I sometimes don’t hear anything and the SDR appears to not work. This not a defect in the SDR. The solution is to use a gain that maximizes the signal quality. The optimum gain might be quite low. I sometimes turn the gain down to three or four dB with good results. I also use a sample rate of 2.4 MS/s even for narrowband applications. This causes the spurious signals to be farther apart and easier to filter out in software. Filters can be added between the antenna and the SDR, but this adds cost and I haven’t found it necessary.

Update 10/2020:The 978 unit has totally failed, so I can’t speak highly to the longevity of these units. I downgraded the review to 3 stars. The good:Units are well packaged, including thoughtful labels on printed stickers including the SN for each receiver. This kit comes with a nice antenna combination, and proper adapters. The bad:These run too hot. I’m using them on a Pi3B+ to run dual band piaware; within minutes I got a flightaware alert for CPU overheat. At first I thought it was the Pi, which was also hot. But it ended up being residual heat from these devices plugged directly into the back. The solution:I bought two 6’ usb extension cables to offload some heat from the poor pi. These still run burning hot, but it seems to help the Pi.The indifferent:A white status LED on each device. Useful to know that they are getting power- but I’d prefer they weren’t there to help lower power consumption and potentially help them run cooler.

I upgraded my Stratux with this. I had old SDR (the kind that came with remote controls and telescoping antenna!) and wanted to improve reception. I received 4 antenna (2 for each frequency, 1 long, 1 short), all the cables I needed to connect, and 2 second generation SDR. The SDR work great. The antenna are stronger and seem to be better tuned to frequency than what I did by hand.I ended up repurposing my old SDR -- and the new (shorter) antenna -- to crowdsource ADS-B data to flightaware and other aircraft tracking websites.

These Nano2 SDRs are tiny. Make sure to have adequate cooling because these units do get hot. The NooElec customer service is very responsive to questions, I was amazed at how patient, thorough they were. Well done, other Amazon sellers should take note how to support after the sale and Amazon return period. This company does it right, I will be back to by more of their products with confidence. I also have their NESDR SMArt which are very robust, keep those new products coming.

I'm still testing these out with a Stratux setup. I had been using the full size SDRs and they worked well but wouldn't fit the white Stratux case. Tried the more expensive Nano 3s but they seemed much less sensitive than the "full size" SDRs and ran extremely hot even with the case fan. Sensitivity on the Nano 2s seems good in both ADS-B use and with radio software on a home computer. Yes, cases must be removed to make them fit a Stratux setup and this version has a bright white LED that would be a distraction for night flying. It could be painted over or even removed if you're bold enough (or mount the unit where it won't bother your night vision).
