About this item: With eyes closed, this beautiful visage is covered with ornate aluminum repoussé. It is a traditional mask used in funeral rites by the chief priest of the Yiku clan of Ghana's Volta Region. The ceremony expels the souls of the recently dead. "The almost invisible mouth makes it sacred because of the silence during funerals," designer Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo explains. "Its possession assures protection while averting misfortune." About our Artist: 'My greatest inspiration is to preserve our rich cultural heritage,' confides Ghana's Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo. 'Initially, I wasn't using lots of different materials, but now I use recycled glass and glass beads, aluminum, brass and more. I sit and draw the mask creatively, and come up with the colors that will make it stand out.'

Not too light or too heavy, this mask is solid wood with light metal materials on the face. I love it and will collect more!

This mask looks nothing like the beautiful model that is represented. The red paint bleeds out of the lines. The red lips appear as if my child painted them on. The steel/metal on the cheeks is very dull-I attempted to add shine to this mask three times. No luck. This mask was expensive-- shame on you for selling this mask at this price!!! 🤬

This piece is simply stunning to look at near and from afar. There are slight imperfections such as off-centered artwork on the forehead and slightly more tarnished aluminum from cheek to cheek, but considering this was handcrafted, these imperfections make it rather unique and perfect in its own way. The mask is VERY sturdy, thick, and heavy. I would recommend this particular mask be anchored by a screw (not a wire nail or finishing nail) and to a stud, because of its heaviness. I have given four out of five stars for overall rating, NOT because of any minor flaws in its craftsmanship, but because my mask did not come with the promised official NOVICA story card certifying quality and authenticity. I was quite bummed about that and hope there is still a way of obtaining that certification for this mask. For one of the more costly masks in the NOVICA collection, this certification/story card should most definitely come with the mask! Shipping was fast, and the mask comes wrapped neatly and very protected in several layers of sturdy paper and cardboard sleeves, and inside of an Amazon box cushioned by strips of AirSpeed air-pillows. This is not my first mask purchased from NOVICA nor will it be my last, but it is one of the more hauntingly beautiful masks to ever grace my home. But circling back to that missing Certification card ...tisk tisk, for its kinda a big thing, at least to me. Would I recommend this funeral "In Silence" mask? Absolutely yes!

First, the merchandise arrived well within the reported time frame. However, more importantly, it is an absolutely beautiful mask. I have a number of pieces in my collection and this one stands out for its workmanship and the overall aesthetic. In addition, having a bit of the background of the artisan has only made the piece all the more treasured. It is hanging in a place of prominence in my home.
