NOVICA Decorative Wood Mask With Beads and Brass Accents, "Black Orange"
Sese wood, metal accents, and a beaded adinkra symbol are expertly combined by Ghanian artisan Awudu Saaed to create this vibrant warrior mask. The double diamond design is called epa and represents handcuffs, a symbol of slavery that West African chiefs have reclaimed as a symbol of law and justice. Working to support his mother and siblings, Awudu learned his craft at an early age and continues the tradition, now training apprentices of his own.

Hand-Carved African Masks and Decor
I was determined to make it and also be able to take care of my siblings. This inspired me to bear all these risks.
I see myself more as a designer and a finisher. After serving a while under master Abdul Karim Star, another featured artist, I started to work on my own in 1996. So far l have trained about 11 people as designers and finishers. I currently have three, out of the 11 people I trained working with me. The remaining 8 have started their own workshop.

Exactly as pictured. Great carving, good wood, well crafted. Definitely not like some of the mass produced or imported copies out of China that use cheap wood and decorations that fall off when the wind blows. It was a wait as far as shipping but worth it. Will definitely look into more NOVICA items.
