About this item: Limpid eyes and an earnest voice seem inherent to this compelling mask. Godfred France creates a design of elegant harmony, embellishing African sese wood with hand-embossed brass and aluminum. Named Shankoko – a Hausa word meaning "the soul," the mask arises from the artisan's own imagination.
About our Artist: As a child, Godfred France used to make boats with worn-out metal utensils, which he'd float in water. 'Due to financial constraints, my parents could not further my education and so I had to drop out of school and join my uncle, who was a wood carver. Thanks to the woodcarving, I've been able to educate my four children and I know that with constant sales, I'll be able to give them a brighter future than I had. This motivates me to wake up each day to carve!'

Exquisite details on these masks! I have traveled throughout the continent of Africa for over 50 years, and have a vast collection of masks from every country I visited. I am amazed that the workmanship, especially the details in the masks that I purchased was still the skill, quality and beauty of the masks I purchased down through the years. I purchased these masks as gifts for my daughter's 50th birthday and for my niece who graduated from Drexel University. The two, have become collectors of African art and masks.

Great art peace, just what I was looking

What's not to love about this Ghanian African mask. Not only is it hand made and authentic but I love the NOVICA mission statement that seeks to give local artisans an opportunity to sell their works worldwide which directly goes to impact their local communities. This particular artist Abdul Aziz Mohamadu, has an impeccable talent for giving each mask its own personality. Whether it be nobility, beauty or spirituality, I've become quite obsessed. This mask in particular is very beautiful, I love his use of materials and textures which invoke feelings majesty and poise. Close up you can literally see the indentations from the carving tool, the tacks used to attach the embellishments all polished and presented with pristine care. This was my first of three that I own now, I will be buying more. These are sitting over my bar in my apartment, I love how as people enter, their eyes are drawn upward. You shouldn't buy this though...so I can say I own an original one of a kind.
