About this item: This long, narrow face could appear in the trunk of a tree, crowned by slender branches. Carved by hand from seasoned African African rubberwood, it is the expert handiwork of Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. "This mask is used by the Gonja people of Northern Ghana," he explains. "It is used to protect their forest, which they believe is the resting place of their ancestors." Named Koholo – a Gonja word that means "protect the jungle," it receives its white coloration from applications of clay.
- Hand-crafted item -- color, size and/or motif may vary slightly
About our Artist: 'I always knew I wanted to paint, but wasn't sure I could make a living out of it, so I looked into other fields too,' recalls Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. 'I observed master carver Musa at his workshop for a period of time, then I picked up a log of wood and started carving out a mask as I had observed him doing. This surprised Musa and he was willing to help me perfect the skill. I developed a love for this new art, and that's how I eventually became a master carver too!'

This mask is absolutely beautiful‼️ I love it! I haven’t put it up yet, however I will do an update once my entire project is done. Thank you Novice and Amazon

I bought it because of the bright colors. As I tried unpacking, my hands became black from colors leaking from the mask. It hardly had any color left on it...was dusty. I was so disappointed. Returning it.

Nice addition to my office collection. Love the Novica Collection of free market artisan products and that include certificates of authenticity. The artisan profiles add a level of depth to the purchase.

It was exactly what I ordered -- the dimensions and colors were what I was looking for. I'm very pleased and have already ordered another piece.

I got this mask to fit into a narrow space which, nevertheless, cried out for something to fill the emptiness. I have a couple other "African" masks (I really don't know where they were carved) that look okay and were a lot cheaper. But after a bunch of searching on Amazon, I chose this one even at the higher price because it just seemed right. It arrived in a flash and was very well packed to avoid any chance of shipping damage. My instincts were correct and it just looks great in that spot and it appears much more authentic than my other two masks. I can honestly say I endorse Novica 100 % and couldn't be more pleased.

I thought these were awesome, as with so many others that are here. I focus on a certain area (wall) of my home, then I look and choose which I'd like to see there (it's a lot to choose from). All three of these mask are perfect for my staircase foyer for all to see the moment you step in the door. The quality is great, the darker mask has good weight, and the paint colors on all of them are wonderful... Right now I have about 10 mask, both large and small, and will get a few more for here and there. I'm very satisfied!

I wish it were bigger. The maroon at the top isn't really maroon. It's more of a ruddy brown. Not sure what I'll do with it now.
