It's an interesting looking snare drum, but it has a snare sound that will knock the socks off your feet. I have several snares that I collect, and this PDP 20-ply is one of the best that I actually use when i play. I love the color and looks.

I've been drumming for 25 years and played everything from a cheap unnamed metal thing to top of the lin ludwigs and Yamaha. This snare is better. Plain and simple. The 20 ply construction give this drum the old school sound that my wife said " sounds just like the records. The drum itself is gorgeous. Both in sound and workmanship. The head that came with it is actually not so bad, although i couldn't change ity fast enough d. Once i got a dry Head , the drum became more than just a timekeeper, it became a musical instrument capable of all kinds of fun tuning. Its a great addition to my Pdp concept custom series kit.The thick wooden hoops will add another couple of inches to your drum, so make sure you have at last a 15 -16 inch drum stand. I had to buy one from pearl because i couldn't find one i liked elsewhere.

I opened the carton and immediately took it apart. My wife caught me with a mag glass counting plys. The drum is really heavy and close to the shipping weight of 14 + lbs. Don't bother with the DW Three way butt end. Won't fit with out drilling the drum. When I called DW, they told me installation of the three way on this drum was not recommended. I think that means holes do not line up. But that having been said, I swapped out the snares for a 30 strand. Because I could. Then tuned it after being in the house for three days. Tuned it tight. Great sound. Just one drum drop and absolutely no ringing! The sales pitch for rim shots is absolutely no BS! A good solid rim shot sounds like a rifle. If I think I need to be heard over the bass player, no problem. The drum is responsive to small nuances, but if you want loud, this is the weapon! Completely satisfied. A new convert to 18+ ply drums. The only downside is that this measures more than 14" OD because of the larger wood hoops. So a standard snare stand is too small. I dug up a Pearl stand that works just right. NOW the downside is that I cant get the Pearl stand to lower the drum to my usual height, But that's a small price to pay for this commercially available howitzer!ALMOST THREE YEARS OUT: Still loving this snare! I use it regularly, and have sorta ignored all the others on the shelves. Actually I was a little overwhelmed early on, since this drum produces many different tones. But, just like a great pair of boots, this drum got "worn in." And the best part for me is there is NO RING. The bulk in this instrument allows the heads to really work! So, in short, it's the real deal.At gigs, a few "drummers" have talked to me about it, and all I can say is, "This drum changed my life...for about $300.00!" Their responses are generally, "Yeah...but MY drum, or, MY kit, or MY band." Sad, so I guess I won't be repping this drum anytime soon!

Really like the drum's tone, but lugs won't stay tight and keep loosening during show.
