I just installed the light (plus dial controller), so I can’t comment on longevity. I had the light professionally installed by an electrician during a pool remodel, to retain the longer warrantee. The light functions perfectly and it is extremely easy to adjust with the separate controller. I cannot imagine flipping through switches to change colors/shows, with so many options. My pool is a Bahia style, about 45 feet long and 17 feet wide at the shallow end. The deep end is narrower, 8-feet deep, and this is where the light is installed. I rotated the lens to the “narrow” pool setting as per the instructions (it is factory set to wide mode). The few shortfalls I noted are that the red light only illuminates about half of the pool. It is far too dim and the shallow end stays dark. Also, the white is not as bright as the old incandescent light it replaced. I have a very mild blue tint in my plaster, which also makes the white light appear light blue. Some of the transitional colors (orange, magenta, yellow – ish) in the light shows are not as deep and pronounced as the straight solid red, blue, and green light. Anything with the blue-green range and “Caribbean” type light shows illuminates very nicely. Overall, I am very pleased with the lighting and effects. If I were building from scratch, I would say two large lights or one large and smaller, additional spa lights are a must for pools any longer than 20-24 feet, or irregular pools with one end wider than the other.NOTE: After installation, the light would come on and shut off after a few seconds. The electrician returned and realized the connections were on the load side of the GFI. If you use the controller, note carefully the wiring instructions. After rewiring, it worked fine. There is also a delay when switching between light modes, where the light shuts off for a few seconds. This is normal. Apparently it is the circuits/relays resetting to the newly selected mode. It does not indicate a malfunction in the light.

I had a standard white light in the pool when I bought the house, and there were electrical issues I had to deal with. Since I was going to be fixing the wiring, I thought it would be a good time to upgrade to a modern light with more features. What a difference this light makes! The pool is much more intriguing with the addition of color action. Even when were just around the pool and not going in, the lights completely change the atmosphere, making the backyard seem like a resort. Plus I get to save on energy costs, since it LED. Great product and highly recommended.

July 2014: If you have a liner pool, the blue and the red color are very dark and do not light up your pool. Our liner is medium blue and when we adjust the setting to these two colors, it looks like we do not have a light on in our pool.May 2015: We bought this light last July and it worked great until we closed our pool in September. We just opened our pool and the colors do not change. The light is constantly on green. I completely understand how to work the light and that is why I am so disappointed because I now know that it just doesn't work anymore. This was a lot of money to pay for something with such a short warrantee. I am still going to contact Pentair because this should not have happened so soon after purchasing it.

So I knew I was going to replace the halogen with color changing LED's and had a good idea of what it would look like. Once it was in, it added more than color to the pool, the color coming off the pool to the walls and plants really make it great! It was well worth the additional cost and is fun to watch.I've never changed a pool light before and it was very easy.Make sure you definitely get a long enough cord length. I measured mine out and was certain that I'd have 20 feet extra but after the pull, I was lucky to have 10 feet left over. YOU CANNOT BE SHORT since it is waterproof wiring. If you are replacing an existing light, make sure you tie some strong string on the end that goes into the power source on the wall. That way when you pull it out from the pool, you simply tie the string onto the new wire and pull it back the other direction. String is cheap and I tripled up so I was absolutely not going to have it break. I need it as it hung up a few times and was actually worried that my three strings were on the verge of breaking.

If your pool's bulb light is out, you do not need this. You need a new bulb. They cost about $25.If you want to save power with an LED light, keeping in mind that the power savings from $500+ LED pools lights will probably never be made up for, mark that you can get a white-only Pentair light for less than the cost of this one. However, if you want "programmable", beautiful colors light shows from your pool -- light shows which are really only visible at night -- along with the benefits of LED lighting (longer lasting, less heat, less power), than this is the best choice.Hayward, another great manufacturer of pool products, makes a competing light with colors. I researched both. This one is better, because: 1) It concentrates light down into the pool using a lens. The Hayward loses much of its brightness by firing upwards. 2) The Hayward uses more power, though the difference hardly matters compares to the 500W a conventional pool bulb uses.
