Fascinating and fun. USB Plasma Ball is fascinating to watch and even more fun to play with --Placing a finger tip on the glass creates an attractive spot for the energy to flow, because the conductive human body is more easily polarized than the dielectric material around the electrode providing an alternative discharge path having less resistance. The Plasma Ball is great for kids of all ages. Whether you are a fun loving work professional or a parent who wants their kids to learn about static electricity without the need to google Tesla's high voltage plasma globe. This is a great year round gift idea. Measures 6 inches tall. Globe measures approx. 3 inches diameter. Base measures approx. 4 inches diameter.

I love this thing. I have always wanted a plasma ball ever since I was a kid, and I don’t really know if they were super expensive back then or just super expensive to a kid, but I never owned one until now. I remember being young and my uncle who is a doctor got one at a White Elephant Christmas party and being extremely jealous and a little resentful. Like these rich doctors thought “oh I’ll buy this $300 plasma ball as a white elephant gift...that’ll be a hilarious joke present” and I would’ve done anything just to have one...oh well, now I do have a miniature version but it makes me happy and a little less resentful. Oh and if you buy it and run it on battery power, just know it only reaches its full potential when it is plugged in. So if you’re a little unimpressed because you only used it with AAA batteries, plug it in with the USB cord and watch it achieve full awesomeness.

For the price its actually a fun lamp for younger kids. I'll probably end up giving this to my coworkers 4 year old son.The bulb is glass, but it's really thin so you need to exercise caution when playing with it.To be honest, I kind of expected there to be more plasma tendrils coming out of the center receptacle, but I guess that's to be expected of a unit that can run off 3 AAA batteries. The unit is not too bright and I would feel comfortable running this as a night light. It even has a built in power switch! A very thoughtful addition.Overall, I am extremely happy with this light and would gladly recommend this toy as a gift for young children.

*edit 3*Took delivery of the replacement, and this one does not shock. It is however slightly different in how it's made. The interior of the inner tubing that emits the plasma tendrils seems to be dipped considerably more than any of the others, and as a result the plasma reaches down into the base as well as up and around the interior of the globe.Isn't a problem as such, but does show the strange randomness of these units.. Up to and including the one that shocked us.Replaced the missing star, but it does seem to be a little luck of the draw like as to what you get.*edit*Third one shocked whoever touches the power input.Other 2 don't.It's pretty cheap, but the function is very impressive. Unlike some, the bulb on the interior is on a raised pillar and right in the center, meaning it emits evenly and attracts evenly.Very recommended.*edit* now the third I've purchased. Not from breakage either.. One as a gift, one for my middle kid, and now one for my youngest because it's such coveted awesomeness :DI think this means it's a recommendation. Still very very low priced and such good value. Still working all these years later. I think that means it gets bumped another star.*edit 2* slightly disappointing. The third one has the inside emitter glued in wonky and so it sends out the plasma more on the side where it's closer. Will return and replace and see..

This review is for the USB Powered Plasma Ball by "generic", "style 1". No "DC 5V 500mA Adapter" included.Judging by pictures, it looks exactly the same to me as other listings on Amazon with similar prices (about $10 or less). One listing in particular looks exactly the same but the design on the box is different according to a picture. Most likely the same factory is making them but I certainly don't know for sure.As a kid I always wanted a big plasma globe. This scratches the itch. It isn't big but it's a nice little sizeThe light in some of the customer pictures looks faint, but in a slightly dim room it looks pretty darn good. I estimate there are about 16 thin moving blue tendrils with pink ends (where they touch the globe) at all times. When touching the globe, there are up to three thick tendrils that will follow your fingers. The more fingers that are used, the more the blue tendrils tend to "flash" around and they become thinner. It's also neat to look at the source of the tendrils at the center when not touching the globe. The tendrils extend from the pink colored source and move around it like little tornadoes.Mine works as expected. Like my other PC lighting, I don't use it all the time. It's probably been active for around 6-8 hours. I keep the USB plugged in and use the ON/OFF switch located on the plastic base. My PC case is black so this looks nice, with it's black base, sitting on top.The USB is removable from the main unit and, since the box mentions a DC power adapter, I suppose the right type could be used. I have not tried to do so. (As advertised, this did not come with one included). For under $10 it is easily a nice little buy. Ideally, I'd like a comparable product with a more durable base than plastic but for that I would expect to pay more. For what I paid and received, I rate this at 5 stars.

It does emit some sound. A constant (not very audible), high pitched static that's easily drowned out by other sounds, but the more you touch it (like the more of your fingers/ hand that you put on/ over it), the louder/ higher the pitch of the sound it makes. Also don't put it within two feet of a touch device. I had resting on my xbox one (which sits below my 360 slim and both right next to my touch button TV) and it was turning them on and off, ejecting the disk (tray on the 360), changing the settings/ channels on my TV and generally just f***ing everything up.But, in itself, it's a really fun and cool thing to play with and look at/ watch. Makes a cool nightlight to watch to sleep (no other lights in the room should be on for best look).Concluding, turn on a ceiling fan or something to drown out the slight noise it makes (unless you don't mind a quiet-ish high pitched static noise), keep it away from touch devices, and enjoy.P.SWhen you open the box, a firework-like smell accompanies it. It fades away within a day or two though (it did for me at least).
