About this item

  • Size: 5/16 inch X 3-1/2 inch
  • Heavy duty wood screw with 6 sided hex bolt head
  • Features deep wood screw threads and does not accept a nut
  • Used in applications where standard wood screws cannot support the load (deck building, etc.)
  • Requires pilot hole to be drilled and installs using wrench or socket tool
  • Thread Type: Deep, Point Style: Gimlet
  • Specification(s) Met: ASME B18.2.1 and ASTM A307A

Lag screw bolts are used in place of standard wood screws whenever the mounting surface must bear a heavy load. The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

I'm a professional handyman. I do a LOT of large screen TV wall mounts. I also mount a variety of rails, and other items at customer requests. Lag bolts are a necessity for me to keep on hand in bulk. This size in particular. I mostly use these in wall studs.I have had only one bolt snap due to heat and overtorque so far. That's not unexpected. All the rest have performed fine out of the batch I ordered.I'll keep ordering these so long as they are available.

These lag screws are typical quality for Grade 2 screws. Out of the bag of 50, using a 1/8" pilot hole into fur framing lumber, I broke off two heads when snugging down the material by hand. These failures were more due to likely running into a knot than the bolt's quality. This amount of failure is lower than I expected and is typical on the job site. I recommend using the proper pilot hole for your material, using an impact driver/gun to run in the screw until just before hitting the washer, and then use a ratchet to hand tighten. You'll have much better feel for when the material seats and will have less risk of over-torquing the screw versus driving it home with a machine.

Zi plated lag screws:I have had no problems with these lags when used in wood with appropriate pilot holes. Less than I can count on one hand lost a head under torque. Every time because I was doing something I shouldn’t. I use an impact driver unless the wood is soft, weak, thin or otherwise prone to cracking or stripping. Those cases I use a regular drill with an adjustable clutch.I have not applied them to concrete, masonry or with any type of shield.
