We had a large kite break free regularly on standard weight string (50lbs I believe). So I upgraded to this and haven't had the string break yet. Easy to let out string and to reel the kite back in. We've used this several times, and in pretty high winds and nothing has broken or been damaged.

I loved using this winder. My 3 year old grandson, my 12 year old grandson, and I had a blast flying our box kit. We let the full available amount of line out and it was a breeze (pun intended!) reeling our kite back in. I'm done with the old time spool winders. This is the best there is for kids and old men. I felt like I was 10 years old again!

Very easy for little ones. I ordered 2, and one had a broken side on one circle, but still useable. Only mentioning to improve your packing procedure.

I ordered one of these a year or so ago and it came exactly as advertised .. 7.5 inch reel. Works like a champ so decided to order another one problem is that the 2nd one arrived and is a 7 inch not a 7.5 inch (See PICTURE). .5 may not sound like a lot but it goes from being usable for an adult (7.5 inches) to not being usable for an adult. If you fly kites skip this and make sure you get a 7.5 inch or larger reel.

If you're coming from old style handwinders this unit will be an improvement. It is somewhat small and men with large hands will have some difficulty. For light and light-medium requirements it seems to work fine. It will likely fail under repeated heavy loads because the plastic components and bearings fit loosely and are medium quality. Just have the right expectations and it should work fine.I have several more expensive very well made metal Chinese Reels and there is no comparison. The Chinese Reels are much more expensive so there you go. You clearly get what you pay for here. When using this or any Reel in a windy environment with more than about a 100feet string extension, I recommend gloves. You only need to get string burn once to appreciate the need for gloves.

As of my purchase, this thing was $12. As another reviewer said, I was thinking it might be a piece of junk due to the price, but I'm pleasantly surprised. It's well made, simple to operate, and makes reeling in long amounts of string incredibly simple. The guide-hole for the string even swivels back and forth so you can wind the string evenly across the spool... just angle the reel left or right to determine which side of the spool the string winds on.There is a hole cut in the reel for you to put your string through and then tie a knot to anchor your string as you wind it on the first time. The handle knob that you use to wind with can be moved forward and then flipped over so it "inserts" into the 3rd cutout in the middle, thus locking the reel in place. Hmmm.. that sounds complicated. Take 2: You can see in the middle where your fingers and thumb clearly go, and then there's a 3rd hole. The knob can flip over and go in there to lock the reel from spinning. (Ok, that at least sounds a little less complicated. haha)So yeah, $12. Flew my kite tonight, let out approximately 600 feet of string, and reeled it back in. Works awesome, was WAY better than a traditional spool. If you enjoy flying kites even a little, get this. If you don't, then why are you reading this? Shoo.

I thought this was going to be a peice of garbage because of the great price. I was wrong!! Product works great. However, with I would think of a different product for children under 8 years old. If it is a windy day the kite really can spin the line out of control with your hand as the only break to slow it down.

I firmly believe that if reels like these were stocked wherever kites are sold, more people would fly kites- and fly them more often. If you don't have a kite reel, GET ONE.That said, this reel is smaller, lighter, and more cheaply made than my previous reel (which I had to eventually replace because we fly kites so much we just slap wore it out.) I bought two of these so we'd have an extra for friends to use, and to have as a backup because at this time no one I can find carries them in stock on this side of the Pacific, so you have to wait for weeks for your order to cross the ocean in a shipping container. This reel is just a hair too small- it JUST straddles the line between big-enough and not-big-enough. I'm an average-sized woman with average woman-hands, and it's just small enough to make it a bit cludgy for me to use. It looks exactly like the designers were pushing the size limit as far as they thought they could get away with, to minimize fabrication costs.Other than that it's just fine. Smooth action, holds a ton of line (I've got a thousand feet of 50-pound line on mine), the locking mechanism works well. It's a great product except for the skimpy size. I'd recommend the larger one I had before.... here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Sturdy-Outdoor-Kite-Winder-Black/dp/B004V7CQD2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=33BL80992AWH2&coliid=I2C1Y0FMJXUK9Q and it looks like they're back in stock again (at less than half of their previous price, too!) so I'm going to order a couple of them now. I have a couple of friends who are thinking about taking up kite flying so I can gift my two little reels to them to get them started. If you fly kites or would like to start it as a hobby for yourself or your kid(s), I just could not more highly recommend getting a line reel. I'd get the black one though, and not this little blue one.
