The friction material is smooth with no rough material on the surface, the fit is to OEM specs and though I'm not past the break in period yet there's no immediate squeals or "growling" like some rougher surfaced shoes make at first. The parking brake lever didn't have any play but move freely and easily. The spring isn't weak but not overly stiff either so re-installing was easy.
