About this item

  • SBR provides good abrasion resistance
  • 70 Shore A means the material is hard for good resistance to surface penetration and wear
  • Color is black
  • Smooth finish

The black SBR rubber sheet is 70 Shore A and has a smooth finish. SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) is a synthetic rubber that provides good abrasion resistance. A hardness measurement of 70 Shore A means the material has a hard surface for good penetration and wear resistance.

Rubber is a strong, flexible material that provides good insulation and shock absorption. Some types of rubber may be weather or chemical resistant and withstand high temperatures. Wear resistance is the degree to which the rubber resists abrasion. Hardness is measured with scales Shore D, Shore OO, and Shore A, which is the most common scale. A higher number means the material is harder and more resistant to penetration. A lower number means the material is softer and more flexible. Tensile strength, used to indicate the material’s overall strength, is the peak stress it can withstand before it breaks.

I was searching for rubber to make bump stops for my jeep, and wasn’t sure on thickness or hardness, so ordered this to test. Absolutely perfect!

We ordered the block of rubber to serve as an extender to mount a doorbell so that it extended beyond some molding by our front door. The 6"X6'X1/2" piece seemed like the appropriate size. The product came in a timely manner on March 13. We opened the box right away and saw that the rubber had had to be bowed in order to force it to fit in the box. Not good. I left it out on a flat surface in a warm room for several days. Still bowed. I then placed it on a table with 2 old World Book Dictionaries and a heavy Bible on top of it. after a week, i looked at the piece of rubber--STILL BOWED. Then, since the weather was warm, I took it out to the covered deck, placed it on a pedestal and put 2 cinder-block caps on the block of rubber. We placed a tower fan about 4 to 6 inches from it and ran it for 15-20 minute sessions 3 or 4 times a day for 2 days. After letting it sit there for about a week -during which time my husband blew at the rubber block from the side with a hot air gun several times. STILL BOWED! The weather turned cold again so I brought the rubber block inside and placed it directly on a heat vent between 2 pieces of aluminum foil and with the 2 cinder-block caps resting on top. After a week of this, I removed the rubber block and the bow seemed slightly reduced. After a couple of days of laying on the counter-the bow was almost as bad as when we took it out of the box. THAT RUBBER BLOCK HAS SOME AMAZING CELLULAR MEMORY!

My sheet shipped/arrived flat (not curved), so I didn't have to work out any bends. Cuts fairly easily with multiple passes of a razor blade, drills nicely with a standard 1/2" bit. I'm using it for vibration isolation mounting a farm jack on my truck and anti-banging between my swing outs and bumper.

SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) Sheet, 70 Shore A, Black, Smooth Finish, No Backing, 1/2" Thickness70 Shore A refers to the density -- this piece is similar hardness to the heel on a leather shoe. There's no smell, it's smooth on both sides and easy to cut with a band saw, chop saw, or similar tool. You can also cut it with a razor knife, but it's tough going. The only negative is that it comes curled up like the letter C. I left it in a vise, with blocks to force a reverse curl and it was better by the next morning -- but it's still nowhere near flat. You can drill it or glue it -- pretty easy to work with.
