As others have said these type of controllers introduce hum to the fans motor. I've read this is because they interrupt the current several times per second to achieve the reducing effect, a side effect is the hum. With my fan the usable range of the knob is 95%-100%, 100% is full speed and any lower than 95% will make a weird noise then shut off. In that very, very small range it does reduce the speed a fair amount, but it's very difficult to set because mm's make the difference.I took 2 stars off, one for the hum and 1 for the knob not correlating to the amount reduced. I imagine the second thing is related to the size/power of the fan but I think all fans will see some hum increase. It's not a large amount but it is worrying...If you want a more expensive alternative you may want to look into 'variac' controllers, these should function on a completely different mechanism and not have the hum. YMMV, I'm just repeating something I've heard and have not tried. Also, I've heard you should not use these types of controllers with certain types of motors, so be careful!

I read the reviews on all of the like items and this one seems like the best choice for the money. It seems sturdy and durable.

FYI! Not the actual Speedster, similar model under the label Ideal Air. Wish seller was honest in photos about description of product. False advertisement.
