Bad design with single latch point that bears can leverage up the corners and wrench the latch off. I added better chain closure in the front but this what they did instead. Has worked for a while but now they are jacking the price because there's no decent competition. Really $400 increases for the same freaking "resistant" can?

Purchased 2 of these 2 1/2 years ago. The locking mechanism rusted and messed up on one such that I couldn’t get it open and had to dismantle it. No bears where I live, so it’s fine for the raccoons I wanted to keep out. But would be really unhappy if I did need to keep bears away as this would no longer work.

I had high hopes for this. Well it definitely keeps the animals out....just not flies, they can easily get through the hole for the latch so every time I open the lid, flies come out. Also, I've only had this for about a month and the latch is now broken and I can't close the lid, it is stuck open. I'm going to call Toter to see if I can get a replacement. It seems like others have had this same issue as time has gone on though so not sure if this will work for me long term.

We have lived 20 years in bear country. I have tried multiple options, including a "bear proof" bin supplied by our waste management company. The bear ripped it open in one night! When he broke our garage door to get to the can, I knew I needed to look elsewhere for help. Enter this bear proof trash bin. Thie first night, the bear batted it all around, but couldn't get in. Chaining the can down is a must. About a month after buying the can, the mechanism quit working. I thought, great, another good idea that loses out to Ursa Major. I called the company and received immediate help. Turns out it just needed a little WD40 and it works again. Last night the bear turned it completely upside down but couldn't get it. I can finally sleep soundly, not worrying or getting up to chase the bear away. I love this can!2017 Update - I am very sad that my can has not stood the test of time. Please see the review just above by mtnpeep. Their experience with the can is the same as mine. The metal rim around the top is irreparably bent, and there is a hole just above one of the wheels. Very sad. Luckily the bears are hibernating right now while I figure out whether to get another Toter or some other option.2018 Update - I got another Toter can after 2017 update above. Now see the attached picture. This may just be trash hauler abuse, but went out to the road to get the can and the photo shows how the metal rim has been bent. First bear of the year last night and trash all over. Gonna try again, but I think I'll eventually just need to build a bear proof enclosure.

Gave it 5 because it is what we wanted and what we got. We watched a 330+ blk bear knock it over and circle it 5-6 times trying to get in it. We live in Fla and have never had any issues with bears accept for the last 2 yrs. The FFG was out here and told us nothing they could do. Gave us a list of dumb options to use that never worked. I used a cable on our old trash can and it worked, but than the bear would drag our trash can down the road. I would have to go out and chase him off. It was worth the money and they (UPS) delivered it right to the house. Ask the neighbor about picking up the trash NOW. We don't works great and is better quality than our old trash can. And the garbagemen love it.......Works on the side grabber or the rack that picks it up by the bar and shakes it into the truck.......Thanks Amazon cause every one else wanted alot more$$$$$$ They price was good and worth it.

This garbage can is very well made and should last a long time. The locking latch is user replaceable if need be down the road if it gets broken, but the C ring that the latch locks onto is riveted on and not easily replaceable, so hopefully that will hold out well.If I never come back to update this review otherwise, you can assume that we haven't had any more trouble with garbage break-ins by the mother black bear and her cubs that live near us.It is hard to believe Amazon shipped this thing half-way across the country to us for free. It came completely assembled, all we had to do was roll it out of the box and it was good to go.The locking mechanism is easy enough to use; my 5 year old daughter has no trouble. The latch can also lock in the open position by easily just pushing on the mechanism from the inside - this is perfect for garbage days so that we don't have to pay extra to have the garbage man manually come out and unlock it. The lid sits normally in this mode, looking like it is locked but the lid is free to open wit the automated garbage trucks. The can itself looks essentially like any other 96 gallon garbage can, except for a band of black metal around the edge and the round pipe sticking up at the front - it is really pretty non-descript and most neighbors will likely never notice it. We got the blackstone model - completely black, and it is nice looking for a garbage can. The picture Amazon had on the item page showed it was green, but the description stated Blackstone so we weren't sure what would show up. Luckily it was the black one as described. The pipe sticking out was also black and not the silver pictured. Everything blends well.Anyhow, great garbage can if you have black bear or raccoon problems. Not sure if it would hold up to a Grizzly but it wouldn't surprise me.UPDATE May 2014: can is still going strong. The black paint is chipping off the metal band, but overall the can has held up great and we have been very pleased.

We filled this can with our trash and chained it to a large pine tree. The bears are very active this time of year and we had to pick up several bags after the bear worked his way into a sealed trash container. We came home the next day to find the can at the end of the chain, intact but with large paw prints all over it. As long as we keep it chained we know the bears will be unable to open it or at least try to open it at their leisure by carrying it away. I would tell anyone interested in bear proof containers to buy this one.
