How to replace the Transfer Case Shift Motor?

Transfer case shift motor is fairly easy to access and replacing it is within the reach of the do-it-yourselfer.

You may have to remove the front driveshaft in order to access the shift motor.

In order to remove the shift motor and install the new one, you’ll need to get the transfer case shifted into its neutral position.

You should be able to do this by turning the transfer case shift shaft with a crescent wrench.

Other than that, you’ll just need to disconnect the electrical connections, unbolt the old shift motor, and bolt on and reconnect the new one.

Installed first one, calibrated it with nt510 worked for 3 months. Triage of error lights came back and returned to rear wheel drive only. Got a replacement, wouldn't calibrate and had clicking sounds during calibration. Got tired of the bull and bought the expensive one from fcpeuro. Been working for 6 months no issues car drives beautifully. Spend the money, these are absolutely garbage.

Not sure why “easy to install” is a rating on here. Not really the sellers problem. Thanks BMW for this crappy AWD system.. Works great though, definitely OEM part, fixed my actuator failure. So that’s good.

!!!Never buy this terrible product it last under 3 months and about 4000 km in my X3. Then started to bang like crazy. Lost money Aiken promised full refund including labour but never did so only paid the product refund. It’s a big mechanical labour which I needed to pay twice. Stay away of this cheap actuator. Amazon didn't help either. Buy local if you can.

Successfully restored the AWD function in my BMW X3 2005 after installing myself. One small piece was broken, but I was able to swap out that piece from the old unit. Saved us the $3000-5000 the shop had quoted me to replace the whole transfer case!

Works like a charm at a fraction of the price of the BMW part. Installed on a 2006 BMW X3 3.0i.

Works great, just don't forget to code it to the car with a professional scanner once you finish replacing it so the 4x4 light goes off. I have a 2006 BMW x3 and its a perfect fit.
