The Wilderness Systems Rudder Kit is the factory rudder for Wilderness Systems kayaks. This kit includes all the necessary parts, hardware, and instructions to install a rudder on your boat. For use on Wilderness Systems tandem kayaks, you will also need the Wilderness Systems Tandem Rudder Kit Module.

The product is exactly as advertised. Once mounted on the kayak it works ok. The installation for the most part is easy if you have a rack for the boat to sit on while you work. The deployment loop can be a bit finicky to get tensioned correctly - took me a few tries. The different feel of the pedals takes some getting used to but they steer the boat while you paddle away and the rudder can eliminate weathercocking in mild to medium conditions. The pedal cables are pretty lightweight and I expect them to stretch over time, requiring maintenance.

I am glad I spent the extra money on this kit. There are some generic systems available that could be adapted, but this was a straightforward add on.It went on a 2023 Tarpon 140. Everything fit and works as it is supposed to. All the hardware was included and the directions were complete. It's made a huge difference in how this kayak handles in wind.

I installed this on a Tarpon 140 this weekend. I assumed at this price it would include better components (actual stainless cable instead of nylon twine) and passable instructions or a website link. It’s very generic with the vast majority of the hardware not necessary but I guess needed if it’s so generic. But generic should support a dramatically lower price. Honestly I feel like I paid triple what this was worth, but at least I have a rudder now.UPDATE: As I feared, the string that was supplied with the rudder proved insufficient and snapped. I would reiterate to the manufacturer that stainless cable should be included at this exorbitant price.

This is a good kit for adding a rudder. But it will not fit on a Pungo 140!! Even called Wilderness Systems. You have to have a flat, vertical surface to mound it.After some internet searching I found someone who had made a bracket to adapt it to the Pungo line. Stainless bracket in picture does not come with kit.

If you have a Wilderness Systems Kayak, this is the rudder kit you want, no exceptions. The kit fit like a glove on my ATAK 120 and Radar.
