Big leaf Maple Burl (Acer macrophyllum) has figure consisting of swirly, unpredictable grain patterns with light to dark variations of cream brown to dark brown color. Natural edges, bark inclusions and internal voids may be present and are not considered defects (in fact, they usually add character to a piece). Big leaf maple burl can be somewhat difficult to turn because of its unpredictable grain. It does, however, polish very nicely. It can create interesting turnings such as pens, bottle stoppers, bowls and ornaments. It is also great to cut into slices for clock making, or thin slabs for beautiful box tops. Air-dried.

Super unsatisfied. The picture shows lots of curves and live edge but my piece had none of that. Just a plain Jane square block of wood

Not that great of a burl, there were curly bits, but the other half of the wood was fairly straight grained.

I'm a bit torn on this one. The usable part of the wood is beautiful. However the picture (and description) lists a 4x4 piece with a natural edge. Mine has about 4x3 of usable wood, then a giant U-shaped hole at the top (so probably another 4 inches or so of unusable wood). The hole has wood in it, but the wood in it isn't usable . . . and not attached to the hole. So unless I were to pot the entire thing in about $75 worth of epoxy, everything past 3 inches isn't able to be used, and it can't be used as a "natural edge" piece. Whoever cut and packaged this one should have not shipped it. However since shipping was nearly 50% of the cost of the wood itself, it isn't worth shipping back (I'd end up fully paying for the wood in the shipping costs anyway). To be fair, I've purchased a lot from Woodcraft and have been extremely happy with *everything* else. I'd just say that in the case of a natural-edged product, you either need to purchase it in person or see a picture of the *actual* piece you are getting. Had I seen this piece in the store I would have never purchased it. So I wouldn't give this as a warning not to purchase Woodcraft products, but I would suggest not taking the risk on this product.

Two great little burls arrived yesterday. Both were as expected and are already being used for box lids. Definetly will be ordering more!

Burl is a tough thing to buy online. My chunk came with a large bark inclusion, and one edge was missing a bit. Other than that, it seems like it'll be a decent little bit of burl. Very dry.
