If you know how to carve bridges, these blanks are average quality maple with short and long grain that can just about be distinguished. The wood is a bit harder and more coarse than other blanks I’ve used but it can still be worked comfortably with a sharp knife or chisel. As a violin player I’ve taught myself to do maintenance with the help of a small collection of instruments in various states of repair. While I’m far from expert when it comes to carving bridges, it’s been a fun challenge.Bridge blanks come with far more wood than the final component requires. Bulk removal is a big part of the process, followed by the more interesting shaping and refining, where structural and tonal integrity meets aesthetics.Personally, I don’t care for the inverted heart-shaped center cut or the curved wing slots and foot span, but those can be straightened and modified somewhat.I carved a bridge from one of these blanks for an instrument I use for “loud” fiddle playing, meaning with other musicians, where I’m willing to sacrifice some tonal subtlety for volume. I’m happy with the results.

My son has a Core Academy a31 4/4 cello which is an entry level cello. He is taking private lessons and is in various orchestras and his teacher has mentioned a few times that he has outgrown the quality of his cello. When his bridge broke, the options were a stock bridge for $85 or $500 for a luthier. We wanted to upgrade, but the luthier price was too high. So, I purchased these stock purchases, did a lot of research, and carved out a bridge. Don't be tricked by other bridges that say that no carving is needed. You will need to adjust any bridge that isn't specifically made for your cello, and even then, your cello may have changed due to environmental conditions. Carved to make sure board to A is 5 mm and board to C is 8 mm. With this new bridge, his basic cello sounds so much richer! I will upgrade his strings next.
