I received this 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet adapter through the Amazon Vine program to test and review, and I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of a low-profile bracket — perfect for installing it in my small form factor PC. The adapter uses the Realtek RTL8125BG chip and includes a solid heatsink. I’ve been using it as part of a file sharing server for backups, and it has been working reliably so far.I tested file transfer speeds and was able to achieve up to 280 MB/s, which is excellent. In Windows Task Manager under the Network tab, it also showed a receive speed of 2.5 Gbps, which matches the adapter’s advertised performance — and I'm very happy with that.Drivers installed automatically on Windows 11, and I expect it would work on Windows 10 as well. One downside is that the QR code on the box leads to a non-functional website, and I couldn’t find any active online presence for the manufacturer which raises concerns about future support or firmware updates. That said, the adapter performs as expected. If it goes on sale, it’s a solid option, though there are lower-priced alternatives with the same chip.

The DriverGenius USB 3.0 to Dual Port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter arrived in branded cardboard packaging as a sleeve within which were the components, consisting of the adapter unit, instruction manual and a mini-cd which contained drivers. Taking the adapter unit in hand for inspection I found the build to be decent, it is plastic as opposed to another unit I have in aluminium alloy, which diminishes the look and feel quality a little. In terms of the adapter layout, at one end is the USB3 cable that attaches to the device you want to plug into such as a PC, Macbook, Laptop or Server, this end also hosts the pass-through USB 3.0 port, whilst at the opposite end are two gigabit ports. The front of the unit has the simple DriverGenius branding emblazoned across it.Before I continue, please not that my environment is all Linux based using Ubuntu and Pop!Linux, I do not use Windows and thus cannot comment on the use or effectiveness of the adapter with that platform. I have two Laptops that I tested this device with one DELL Workstation running Ubuntu and one HP POP!Linux based unit. I tested this by plugging it in to each of them and rebooting, then checking to see how many ports had been recognised of each type. I was very pleased with the results, since in both cases the USB pass-through port and both gigabit Ethernet ports were recognised and available for use with no additional effort or drivers required...top marks there. Testing the use of a USB 3 Stick then a USB 3 wireless adapter was produced similar results – worked like a charm. Testing the gigabit Ethernet ports was the last thing I did, trying to measure the speed as a single port using a download in each case then as two separate ports downloading at the same time to see if there was any impact – this proved not to be the case, I could see no degradation of the download speed when both used together. ..again, top marks! This adapter delivers on performance and (at least for Linux) compatibility without special drivers, it is a very useful tool to have available if you want to have multiple networks available on demand in an environment that might have no additional physical network kit available for such a use. You can also use it to make a virtualised firewall or load balancing environment – say with a Raspberry Pi or a laptop that isn’t used for anything else, indeed deploying this for virtual machines through separate physical networks as a learning environments is a good use case. The price seems high for what it is since you can buy small physical switches for very little money, but portability and flexibility is its strength – and it fulfils that requirement perfectly.

There are several reasons why this could be useful, not least as a replacement for a faulty or non-functional Ethernet port on a laptop, desktop etc. While replacing the Ethernet card on a desktop is usually easy and feasible, doing so for a laptop is complex and expensive needing professional involvement. It is also capable of far more. The "USB 3.0 to Dual Port Gigabit Ethernet Adapter for Business or IT Professionals, CU200" can allow two routers or other network feeds to be connected to a computer, either to gain the advantage of greater speed where software supports the ability or to choose which source is used. It would be of major relevance for users of virtual machines including software developers and testers of applications or operating systems etc for performance, errors etc or simply during the alpha and beta phases of their development to see how they react and relate to other software. While it needs a USB 3.0 port for connection, it has a pass-through so the number of ports available to the user is maintained. The device is larger and heavier than some may expect and needs its driver and support software to be installed; supplied on a mini-CD but, for those without access to an optical drive, there is both a printed download link and a QR code in the manual (and the packaging sleeve). While there are several mini-hubs that offer an Ethernet connection plus combinations of USB, video and possibly audio ports of various types and capabilities they require a USB-C port and not all portables or desktops have one. This is for those exceptions. There are less expensive USB 3.x single-port Gigabit Ethernet adapters, most being plug-and-play, but this is the only one known to support virtual machines which were once personally essential but not recently; for those who need the option, it may be a saviour.
