Works out of the box. Connected this via supplied USB cable to my Linux desktop and it was recognized without any drivers being installed.There is another USB power supply in case external power is needed but I never used it.Had a ton of old CDs with data that I needed to transfer. Had no issues reading those old CDs using this device.The device has 4 USB ports as well so can be used as a hub. Additionally it can function as a SD card reader too!So with just one USB port of your computer , this device can expand the reach to 4 USB , SD card and CD drives .What's excellent about this device is the USB cable is attached and folds in securely into the back of the device .This makes it portable and easy to carry with the USB cable not dangling but staying secure.Over all a great device !Note : have only rated it with standard CDs but it is advertised to run DVD too and burn CDs too
