The hex shank with power Groove reduces bit slippage in the drill and makes it suitable for use with a variety of drill types, including impact drills. Used for drilling treated landscape timbers for spikes. Worked awesome. You need a large drill in order to turn this bit as the self feed is aggressive, but works great as long as you have enough power to turn it. It worked good in an 18V brushless drill, but really well once chucked up in a 1/2 electric drill.

I worked as a carpenter for years and have used a lot of different drill bits. Spade bits are necessary for trades to make holes for plumbing, wiring, etc. They are typically cheap and do not last long. In other words they are disposable. And they do not like knots or nails, both of which can be found in studs during remodeling. These bits can cut through knots and nails like butter. They cost a bit more than a spade bit, but are so worth the extra price when you need to drill a number of holes and you don't want to go to the hardware store halfway through the process.

I had the Irwin 1/2 before this. It was terrible. Would not go through a 2x4 unless I slammed it in. This one works so much better and smoother.
